I'm back!
No longer a machinist, new job, house, and car.
My '85 is at the end of its life, my hack bodywork is coming apart and it looks awful. Engine is still great but the tranny is shot. Not worth fixing.

Anyway, I still love these cars, been looking for a good one and found one down in Columbus rust free and already converted to a 4-speed. Went and bought it, then drove it home. What a white knuckle ride it ended up being. Fuel issue somewhere, it wouldn't idle. Alternator died on me halfway through, I made the last 50 miles of the trip in the dark with no headlights, taillights, ect. Miracle that I didn't get pulled over.

Couple of dents to work out, a few very tiny rust bubbles. Floors are completely solid, no rust on the underside at all. Plans are to get it running properly, get it looking good, then to make it go fast. I'm going to swap most of the interior from the '85, and my rims + shocks.

First things first, there is a lot of neglected maintenance to get caught up on. Parts ordered already and on their way. The PO ran his own biodiesel, and the very rough/won't idle leads me to believe that the fuel system is probably dirty.

On the positive side, the car is fun to drive with the manual trans, more peppy and responsive.

More to come!

Thanks guys.
I haven't worked on a car in a year, i forgot how rewarding it feels, especially when it's not your daily driver and you're under the gun to get it finished so you have a car to drive Big Grin

Started today with a blank canvas

And here's how I left it

I even took a few extra minutes and put my momo steering wheel and wood shift knob in

Valve adjustment, removed the glow plugs and injectors. Cleaned up the linkages and vacuum system a bit, painted the valve cover. Removed EGR, ALDA, and air cleaner. At this point I'm just waiting on parts to come in. The linkage bushing is shot, motor mounts are collapsed into the frame. I pulled my injectors out of the '85 and cleaned them up, they should still be good, definitely better than what I took out, the originals are gunked.

Fuel level sender is bad, I tried to get the one out of the 85 to no avail. Channel locks wouldn't work and I don't have a socket big enough. I want to pull the original to see what it looks like to determine how the fuel tank looks (sludge or no).

Pulled the instrument cluster to fix the odometer.

If you want to buy the 46mm socket, there's a guy on Ebay selling 1 13/16" Gearhead sockets shipped for around $12 bucks. The standard size works fine for 46mm and not a lot of play. I had to yank a fuel sender and the channel locks and mega vice gribs started to chew up the flange.

I've always wanted to find someone with another 300D, just to see how mine stacks up against it. But you'll already have the slight advantage of a manual Wink

Shifter boot is in the mail. Along with a PILE of other parts. This hobby is a sickness.

So in waiting for my parts to come in I got tinker-itis real bad. Went out today with the intention of just timing the pump, resulted in pulling it and making quite a few adjustments.

3 turns torque control
Max RPM screw all the way in without its lock nut
Rack limiter removed
1/4 turn on the idle gov

The last one I did partly because of my adjustments and partly because the idle was quite low to begin with. If you let off the throttle quickly it would die, and the idle was about 500rpm.

I have to wait till my injector heat shields and glow plugs come in before I can start it. I did get it timed too for what it's worth. Time will tell if she will start/idle/run at all

New alternator installed, along with new drive belts, injectors and glow plugs. In trying to start it I may have discovered another problem. I think the tank strainer/fuel tank is clogged up, trying to prime the system I can't draw any fuel from the tank with the primer pump.

It's been smooth sailing and finally I hit a problem

Can you blow into the hose? Also, make sure the supply/return hoses didn't get reversed on accident, had that problem in my w116 and it didn't really want to run like that lol

-1982 300D Turbo, 280k miles, ALDA apparently maxxed, fram 8038, 12 lbs boost, non-egr manifolds, W/M injection, 4 brake light mod, Gen II w126 front rotors/calipers, 4-speed swap
In the works: A/W IC, adjust pump, turbo rebuild (w/60 trim comp wheel)
-1980 300SD, 110k, project car. Goal is to get it lookin' like it did on the showroom floor (body and interior wise, not necessarily under the hood )
-1974 240D, FRESH PAINT!!!!!!

yes check that. If the car has been sitting for a while it will develop gunk like it did on mine. Also the fact that he ran on biodiesel is also something to check out.

When I ran on WVO overtime my second tank that housed the oil would form a thick skin, almost like chicken skin and it would clog up hoses and filters when it started to break apart when driving around and hitting bumps.

stuff is nasty. Get some dieselKleen and use it on every fill up for a while. You could also drop the tank, have it cleaned and replace all the hoses. Might be worthwhile.

When I cleaned the tank on my w116 I just pulled it out, hosed it out really good, let it sit in the sun for a while to help it dry, sloshed a little of the turpentine like substance around it that came out, let it sit in the sun some more, put back in car and added fuel and some fuel stabilizer. Bam ran great afterwards, still fires up with a fresh battery after months of sitting

I dropped the tank. Sure enough there's an inch thick layer of nasty stuff in the bottom.

I scraped out what i could, I've got it soaking in mineral spirits. The fuel level sender literally fell apart when I took it out. Going to flush the lines, bought all new rubber lines and obviously all new filters and tank screen.

I need help with this spring compressor. After i filed the FUCKING spring perch holes to get the thing in there, now it jams against the bottom perch and I can't get the spring out. What am I doing wrong?

I'd add some algae killer additive the first time or two you fill it up to make sure nothing grows in that nice clean tank!

For sure. It's not a terrible job to pull the tank but it isn't something I want to do again.

Ok so I got the springs out. the one that was wedged I pried it out with a shovel :roll eyes:

I cut 2 coils. Wondering if I should have cut another coil, or maybe another 1/2. The car does sit remarkably lower, and I still have about 5 inches from the oil pan to the ground.

Thoughts?

I think w123 look so much better lower to the ground, in a tasteful way of course. Nothing to obnoxious like the ricer kids pull off.
I think your car is looking good!

glad you got the whole tank thing cleaned out. I actually have to do the same exact thing for mine. I had a CAT water/fuel separator and the top filter was jam packed with this bacteria stuff. I actually have a picture of it. Its nasty. I even kept the filter just because I still cant believe this stuff grows in our tanks.

cant you raise that a little bit? I know on my 240D there's this arm that holds it right after the down pipe and it looks like you can adjust the height. I have yet to play with it though.

Not really, if you move the bracket that you are talking about it would have to kink it going to the turbo for it to move.
The guy that did my exhaust did a pretty shitty job tho, if I had it redone by someone that knew what the heck they were doing, it would probably be a little better.

VERY productive day. I abandoned the tank with all the sludge in it, realized I had a perfectly clean tank sitting in the 85. Yanked it out and put it in the 84. The exciting way - with it still 1/3 full of fuel. New tank screen and fuel lines. I was literally covered in diesel.

After getting that together I was still unable to draw any fuel from the tank. The only thing left that hadn't been cleaned out or replaced was the lift pump. Swapped for the 85's and bingo we have fuel. Lift pump probably was the source of the original problem but Im still glad I swapped out that dirty fuel tank.

I redid the front springs and cut another half coil. Fronts are now perfect. Did the rears, and put in new rear shocks and metal sway bar links. Cut 1.5 coils from the rear which is a little too much. I'll have to either put thicker pads in or pound some spring blocks in there to bring it up a little bit.

I got the fuel system primed, battery charged and got it started. I still need to adjust the vertical throttle stop, I think there is a wearing in period with the IP when you make an adjustment. When it first fired up it wouldn't idle, I had backed off the vertical throttle stop 5 turns. Turned it CW till it would idle, return to idle was only slightly slower.

Took it for a drive. I didn't want to push it too hard being I don't have gauges in yet. Definite difference in acceleration and revving. It will shoot right up to 5000 rpm. My 85 you have to ask it politely to go past 3k. Not quite as fast as my Mini but we're getting there.

So once it was warmed up the return to idle began to take longer and longer. So I need to back off the vertical throttle stop some more, and I hope it will idle when I do. If not ill have to pull the pump again and adjust the idle gov.

We're getting there!

Guy charged me $120 I believe, but id pay twice that just to get it done right. AND its only from the downpipe back, so nothing hard or fancy about it. I am about to reweld some hangers on it, because I am thinking a 3" to 3.5" polished stainless turndown will look pretty badass Cool

Those rims looks awesome, I really need to get some tires and get my rims on my car.

On a side note, did new shocks raise your ride height? I have noticed mine is slightly lower on one side of the rear then the other, and wondered if it could use shocks. Still rides fine tho

Thanks! Yes that would look good, my plan is a polished 3.5" slant cut tip.

The next step is turbo and intercooler. I have an A/A intercooler I'm going to shoehorn in front of the radiator and a Holset HE341 Big Grin

I "frenched" the euros and blacked out the grill.

Here is a side by side comparison of when I got it and now. (at the same shitty angle)

It now will idle and return to idle when revved. Its like it had to wear into position inside the pump. The idle even when hot is very rough. The only thing I can think of that I haven't done is the rack damper bolt. So thats the next thing I'll try. Need to get the engine and trans mounts in too.

For some reason tho, I like the old H4 style headlights, but the Euros still look good!

I think your car would look pretty darn good with some tint on the windows, I just got mine done a couple weeks ago.

Definitely tint on the windows, I forgot that one, that's the last cosmetic thing I wanted to get done.

Your earlier question, the shocks didn't raise it at all but I went with cheap crap shocks for the rear which I'm regretting. Going to pull my HD's off the 85, and I also might have a line on some stiffer rear springs that someone isn't happy with (Big Grin)

What did you do to "french" the head lights?

I took the lights apart, paint the fog reflectors with yellow stained glass or wheel paint and paint the bezels inside dark grey. I should have tested the paint I used on the reflectors, it's not very shiny looking. I used metalcast yellow.

Oh absolutely it's big. But it's basically the same as an hy35. Reading posts by dieselboy and watching his videos convinced me. And once I throw a 7.5 or 8mm pump on there I'll already have enough turbo to burn the fuel.

I've experienced the instant spool VNT, I want to know what top end feels like Big Grin

Honestly, the feeling of a turbo spooling and throwing you back in the seat when it lights is better than instant spool off the line. Just for the cool factor Cool
I've driven several trucks with big chargers on them, its fun.
And once dieselmeken starts producing more of those pumps he just built, you'll be breaking stuff left and right Wink

The intercooler I bought is too big. Shopping around for a slightly smaller one. Contemplating going with an aluminum radiator ala Greezer/lgreely83.

Working on it. To make it fit I had to remove the A/C and cut one 3" hole behind the drivers headlight. Price of progress Angel

Just to show possibilities, if you wanted to run this turbo without an intercooler you could plumb it something like this:

I briefly considered running it that way but decided to go full hog.

Waiting on my intercooler and plumbing to get here.

I've been putting off the engine mounts, for some reason I just knew they were going to suck. Well I was right. The 8mm allen bolts BOTH stripped on me. So I tried to just take the engine mount arm off but it won't come off with the mount still attached.

Tried cutting it off, twisting it, hack saw, brute strength, nothing. I was considering breaking the aluminum mount in half and getting new ones, but decided to walk away today. I'll try again tomorrow. Only way I see it is to drill the heads off.

I thought they are 10mm? Hmm, I can't remember.

Yep, worst case, break them with a sledge hammer. The aluminum will crack in half. But make sure the bolts to the block are tightened down. You don't want to bend a stud.

You cant get one of those socket looking easy-outs over the head of the allen bolt?

If anything even starts to strip on me, I always heat them up with a torch and them cool it off with water. Except for women, they don't like that too much.

larsalan I guess I need to look at this stupid ass drip shit. What you have to like mess with those elements on the pump? What a fucking hassle. then use some wire to hold the throttle open or some shit?

I tried man. Knife and hack saw. Those things can't hold the fuckin engine up but they are very tough.

If I still had a machine shop at my disposal I might try to fabricate my way out of the problem, make new arms and use different (better) rubber mounts.

Really? Last time I pulled an engine we jacked the oil pan and then used wd40 & a box cutter to chop the rubber out. The wd40 makes it easy.

My intercooler came in. Too small. If I'm going to do this it has to be done right the first time.

The above is the intercooler I'm going to try next. The outlets have to be on the bottom to work, no room to connect on the sides.

Lawdy lawdy

FINALLY found the perfect one!

Thinking about my idle problem, I think my IP is bad. Car won't start unless you "give it gas" while cranking and the idle is very rough with timing spot on. The lift pump was bad, and coupled with my slugged tank I think the "biodiesel" killed the IP too.

I've decided to install my M pump. Stock elements for now but all I have to do is pull the pump when I'm ready to ship it to dieselmeken.

Forced's instructions say to make identical turns to the coarse idle screw when you adjust the full load screw. Im thinking that the logic there is similar to the backing off the idle screw when adjusting the torque control in the MW, which is proven to be wrong.

I will try adjusting the full load without touching the idle screws and see if it works.
