There are a couple of down under companies that have built a business on conversion bellhousings for Toyota transmissions. The information on their websites is incomplete, you will need to contact them directely. I don't know if they've done Mercedes, but they would be the first people I'd ask:

4x4Labs claims to have adapters for both Supra and T5;

The "Supra" box is a name that generically applies to many Toyota five speeds (and some six speeds). The the true Supra box can handle very high torque. But the W58 and R154 Supra boxes are very rare beasts...when was the last time you saw a Supra on the street? Most of the boxes that you find are from lesser Toyotas. Parts availability isn't great. Best bet is to source a used tranny direct from Japan, there are several companies around that do this, including both of the above companies.

If I was doing this, I'd prefer a T5. Component availability is very good, and there are US companies that make conversion hardware for putting Merc Diesels into Jeeps and pickups:

I stumbled upon an R154 on Craplist for $150!
How rare and/or valuable are they? This one is from a '91 7mgte but there's no mention of its mileage or condition.
How strong are these?

They are strong boxes and a lot of the V8 guys use them, the conversions cost a fortune though which makes them unatractive when compared to T5 or its big brother T56. That said there probably aren't many boxes with easy of the shelf parts to bolt onto a Merc diesel engine.

I have a r154 in my most recent supra. theyll handle 600whp stock form. do some marlin crawler parts and go for 800-900whp
The thrust washer and bearing retainer plate are the weak points.

r154 have recentally became popular for drifting and 2jz swaps in everything because there cheap and found in all mk3 supras. going price for one was $200 now its like $500 for a raped one and $2000 for a race ready one. they can be found though.

w58 hold up to about 400hp then input shafts tend to give up if not 5th gear.

v160 aka mk4 6 speed are the god trans of 2jz motors that wanna stay shifting gears. plenty of 1000+hp supras,is300,gs300 and other swapped cars with this trans.
but they go for 3k beat up, to 7k+ with package deals like fancy clutch muliti disk setups

As long as you can squeeze a starter in there somewhere, it's really simple. Adapter plate, drill out a flywheel(or use a 240 flywheel), clutch disc form the donor.

If you're the DIY type you can trace a 617 intermediate plate for the pattern.

The tricky part is lining up the input shaft-if you're careful you can do this with a bushing between the input shaft and the merc crank, and then level/clamp it all together. If the bellhousing is removable, a dial indicator and offset dowel pins can be used to center everything after the fact.
