I've got a higher stall late torque converter that fits the later crank pilot which is 34mm. I want to put it behind an earlier motor with the 35mm crank pilot diameter. I guess it would be just crazy talk to just stick it in there, right? Has anyone done it?

I thought the pilot centered the torque converter. An off-center torque converter could make a nasty vibration and possibly tear up the pump.

Yes that is true with a little wiggle room from flexing with the flex plate for alignment purposes.

To answer your original question, it will work because the pilot on the torque converter will never reach the crank pilot hole because it is too short. Instead it is centered by the flywheel. The flywheel inner diameter never changed throughout the years.
