Today I got ambitious and thought I would fix my sun roof and some how got turned around and took my guage cluster out. Now I drove the car in my shop with mostly everthing working as it should (glowplug light never worked and fuel gauge off due to my laziness to clean the pick up). I got it all cleaned up and new lights put in now myffuel gauge and temp guage dont work. My high beam light dont work but it makes my temp gauge flicker. I think theres a ground off because if I move my speedometer cable everthing works as I should.

So I guess my question is, is there a ground in the harness that plugs into the back? Or does it ground through the cable?

Grounds are a common problem on these cars, I think most of the grounds are grounded on your steering column? At least that's the way my old 79 was, unless that was someone elses handy work.

Where are you at in Ohio codeman?

did you check your fuses? If the various gauges worked pre-repairs and now don't, I'm guessing it's something pretty simple ... a wire is loose, or fuse, or something in that neck of the woods.

Im from bellefontaine, its right in the middle of springfeild/ marysville.

And to be honest I havnt checked any fuses, I took the car for a drive last night and was too frustrated to mess with it anymore. Do you think if I take that mess of grounds off and clean the contacts that would help?

Check out what you're hitting when you wiggle the speedo cable. There's the loose connection.

Ive learned if you sit at idle or have the engine off everthing works as it should. When I get a chance im going to clean all the contacts and see if that helps.

Update: I think I may have tracked the problem down to a little ground clip has broken at the solder joint, im waiting on my iron to cool off so I can get back out to the car and see what it does.

Cool, I'm originally from Marietta, but currently am in Wooster for college at ATI.
These darn electrical problems will drive you up a wall I know. My car blows the tach/horn fuse every time I hit the kickdown switch. I haven't had time to track all the grounds down and clean them.

i had a few buddies that graduated a few years back from there. but now after checking all my connectors and grounds my gauges still don't work, so im just going to build a new cluster, but im trying to measure the ohms on my sender and its either 0 empty or a little over 60 full (analog muiltimeter) there is no in between, so does that mean my sender is bad? if so that will prolly make my life easier in the long run but id still like to keep the factory connectors.

Zero of your gauges work? what about oil pressure? cause that is mechanical, as is your speedo.

there are several grounds to check behind the cluster: a couple on the chassis and, as i recall, the two sides of the cluster. there is a supplemental ground mod that is not a bad idea to do back there. i would also clean the pins and sockets of the harness connector(s).

english red rat rod 1977 240D, OM617.952 burning B99.9, iron 4-speed & 2.88 diff, 195/60/R14 on alloys, 5mph bumpers, battery in the trunk, 25mm swaybar, 4x ECE H4 lamps, double brake lamps, deleted sunroof, export zoll & california blue plates

Sorry I haven't got back sooner, I think im going to just build a new cluster this winter, vdo makes a tube type pickup for fuel and since the oil pressure gauge is mechanical ill just use that line for a 2 1/16 gauge. Im in the process now of finding the wires for the idiot lights now. Ill try and keep everbody posted as I go.
