1987 Mercedes 300SDL Super Turbo Restore/Project
So I removed the air box, and I assuming the AFM. I then installed a Specter air filter on the inlet tubing that goes to the turbo. When I am driving there is a little more power, however when I back off the throttle from boost it sounds like a ricer blow off valve. Question is... is this ok to run the car like this or am I a complete idiot and I need to put the air box & afm back in? Still learning here with the diesels & turbos. Here are some pics.

There are big paper filters that can be easily attached to straight pipes without air boxes.

larsalan I guess I need to look at this stupid ass drip shit. What you have to like mess with those elements on the pump? What a fucking hassle. then use some wire to hold the throttle open or some shit?

08-13-2013, 08:15 AM #2The Spectre/K&N/random eb*y filters aren't that great but they get the job done. As long as it's oiled and you know that it's not the best filter in the world, you're fine.

i have the airaid equivalent here and am looking forward to deleting the huge 85 CA filter canister... if i can prove that the small one works well enough. as long as boost reaches the desired level it means there is enough air coming in, right?

Just get a filter minder, and install it between the filter and turbo. When the filter gets restricted, the filter minder is sucked in and turns red-showing you that the filter is too restricted.

It's perfectly okay to run the car like this, but using an air box or at least some sort of barrier between the filter and the rest of the hot engine bay is better than the filter sucking hot air from around the engine.

08-14-2013, 10:48 PM #5The sound you hear is turbo surging, and it's the sound ricers wish their cars made. A blow-off valve just sounds like a whistle, air leak, or someone farting. The turbo surging sound is entirely different.

I defiantly need to get the filter away from sucking hot air. I just didn't want any permanent modifications until being sure it was ok to run like this. I plan to run a innercooler once I can track down a euro exhaust manifold and HX35.

They suck in hot air and will never be as efficient as the stock on. Most of the stock ones are enclosed and have pipes leading to the outside of the car. sucking the cold air.
