I've never removed an injection pump, but I need to so I can get it modified. I found some instructions but I would like some imput from others if possible.

Instructions: http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/MB%20...1-8410.pdf

1.) buy special tools--the basket or assempbly cage, and blocking bolt
2.)disconect groung battery line
3.)unbolt noise encapsulation (what is this)
4.)unscrew central securing bolt, left hand threaded
5.) turn crankshaft to 14 degrees plus .5 degrees...TDC...look at instructions--please explain in more detail-
6.) remove chanin tensioner--necessary?
7.) unbolt injection lines at pump
8.)detatch vacuum lines at pump
9.) unnplug plastic coupling microswitch
10.)remove cruise control
11.) ARA? unplug
12.)ELR? unplug
13.)overflow restriction, unscrew?
14.) fuel lines, remove
15.)10/2 and 10/3 bolts
16.) injection pump--counter hold injection timing device--what?
17.) forgot-- first remove intake maniflod

Do I have to remove the vacum pump? Is bolt 40/3 behind the vacuum pump?

What do you use fo the special notched wrench listed in the insturctions? What are the big things to be aware of?

Lots of questions, I know. Add what you can, if possible. I gotta get the pump out! Then back in! Thanks in advance.

Yes, you have to remove the vacuum pump to get to the lefthand threaded bolt. The injection pump locking tool is also very useful:

What does the basket do? Do I "need" it? Or is there a way to go without it.

The basket for the vacuum pump? I ditched mine on my 603 when my pump failed. Most new or rebuilt pumps say to ditch the basket. Not to sure if the 606 needs it but I doubt it does being they are so similar.

The basket holds the timing pulley in place when the pump is removed. Without it the pulley drops into the timing case.

I'll take measurements of mine if you feel you can fabricate one from 1mm steel. Not that complicated.

I haven't torn into a 606 by hand yet but I'm sure that there must be a way to rig it without using the special tool. Safety wire and coat hangers?

I think this is the part number 601 589 05 14 00. In the U.S. dealer prices range from about 150 to 300. I got lucky and bought a used one from a nice guySmile I guess about two years ago the dealer price was 10 bucks then they went to 150! Thanks Mercedes.
