Hi I am looking at relocating the oil filter housing on my 606 to a screw on metal type that I will mount down along side the sump drain plug.

I need to make a plate that replaces the standard oil filter housing, that just has pipe outlets on it for the remote filter head and the oil cooler,

But the standard setup has a puzzling feature, the oil cooler feed line is fed from an oil gallery in the block but it has a poppet valve in the filter housing that either only allows oil flow one way through the system (unlikely) or it serves to "trap" oil in the upper block after shut down.

So does anyone know specifically what the poppet valves function is?

Or does anyone have a good schematic of the oil system?

I can easily omit the valve in my design but i'd like to know if it is not a necessity before I make that decision.

Thanks

The 617 have something similar. The attached PDF shows the flows.

Thanks torkey, I'll study that and see how similar it is to the 606

The oil flow trough the filter always starts on the outide of the filter as it has the biggest surface. The oilflow ends up in the middle of the filter and goes out of the threaded holeWink

Me and dirtydiesel are working together with this and we understand the oil flow path just not what this little poopet valve does, as its not a thermostate and only takes a very very light press to open it.
And if its need we want it after all merc put it there for a reason

If you study the 617 oil diagram above Matt,

It looks like the oil comes in through the poppet valve out through the larger hole in the block with the smallest hole being the bypass.
