A used 8 blade HX35 has come up that the buyer describes as needing a re-build with 'some' play in end shaft and 'slight' scuffing on the compressor wheel.

I know that 7 blade versions are more sought after; I also understand what is involved in a rebuild. What about 'scuffing' though? If wheel has impacted housing, that sounds bad?

Obviously all will have to be balanced against cost, but perhaps this is an opportunity to buy a used HX35 more cheaply and do the work to bring it back to spec.

Opinions please

I am an amateur but, if the compressor blades have been visibly scuffed by the housing or any foreign object I would say the compressor wheel is knackered.
If you've ever run any kind of rotary tool like a grinder unbalanced or had a wheel on your car unbalanced you can see that the problem will not go away.
Compressor wheels are really light, yeah. But they spin real fast too, like 100k, rpm. Right?
So, I am quite sure nicks and whatever are very bad.

As you say maybe a rebuilt kit is all you need.
So you weigh the costs and include your time. The broken turbo + rebuild kit + time ordering, consulting, wrenching. Is it worth it?

I had just looked to ebay for the hx35 and maybe they are fake knockoffs but it seems to sell for 3-400USD in proper working order. Rebuild kit maybe $50USD+

Rusted out beat down 300d turbo 82' -- RIP
Nice body, tons of ridiculous mechanical issues - 300d turbo 82' /motor 85'

As above depends on the damage but count on a rebuild kit, new wheel and of course balancing. If you can get all that including the purchase for less than a new or recon one then go for it. Make sure the housing isn't trashed as well though.

I don't know about in the UK, but here in the states there are so many hx35's that there is no reason to buy one you have to rebuild.
You can buy one for $250, with only 120,000mi on them.
I know people that have GIVEN them away (not very intelligent people though Big Grin)

They are considerably rarer over here (we have an almost unlimited supply of E300TDs though Big Grin ). I might have a look on ebay US - what is the likelihood of getting caught out with a fake though?

I got a Core hx35 from the US for about $250 delivered, on ebay the genuine Holset HX35s that don't require rebuilding have been $1200 or more even from the US, you can get a copy from the US for about $400 new but I'm unsure of the quality, there's also some speed shop here in Australia selling new HX35s for $250 but those are copies too.

You can buy a used genuine holset off ebay that will probably be okay. The biggest hint that they aren't holsets is that it isn't embossed on the compressor cover and they don't have a serial # tag.
The most obvious is the embossed name, Because not all turbos have the tag on them.

I bought it for c. $300.

Strip, rebuild shouldn't run to that much and it will give me the certainty of knowing its back to spec once done.

While I'm doing at it though, is it worth considering upgrading anything? I guess to go from 8 to 7 blade would need a new housing ?

I'm building this for a 350HP target 606 (Myna pump) to go into a W460 G Class for Desert Rally next year; my thinking is that high RPM horsepower for faster spool is a good trade if possible.

Yup, but as I say they aren't at all common over here and buying one from the USA (by the time you've paid shipping etc) would have been expensive too.

$90 for the shipping sounds about right. Typically, we then get hit for import duty etc. I could see a $400 turbo from the states winding up at $600 by the time it was here and I'd probably just rebuild it anyway to be sure. Unless the compressor housing is trashed on this then I think I should get the whole thing rebuilt for $450 probably.
