I have a W123 Mercedes-Benz sedan with the coveted five speed transmission, the Getrag 717.400. The latter is the only bolt-on five speed for the OM617.9XX engine. The drivetrain was recently transplanted into a 1983 240D since the "original" body had too many issues. The current body is a super nice 149K mileage body (current reading). The color is Pastel Beige, 684(H). The engine is purportedly from a 1984 Euro 300D NA, however I cannot verify at this juncture. The car started off as the Sleeper and now the Sleeper Part Deux. There are limited pictures on both threads.

I am just floating this out there now to see what responses I get at this point. If I decide to sell it, I will re-post it. I am most likely going to be doing this the end of April 2013, about 13 weeks from now since 1). I need time to take care of a handful of items; 2). Time to give folks who are interested and serious the time to get the cash. Tax season ends around 4-15-13 and refunds should be in hand by then.

The drivetrain is a OM617.912 NA (non-turbo). I have a handful of maintenance and repair items to do before I would be content on selling it. This will include new tires on 5.5 aluminum rims, new front end suspension parts, et cet. The car is currently my DD so I am currently looking for a non-MB replacement. If I find a suitable replacement, then the sales date will most likely be moved up a little. The drivetrain is fine EXCEPT the trans may have a bad snychro from 1st to 2nd (2nd gear snychro I assume). I can easily shift thru every gear no problems HOWEVER shifting from 1st to 2nd and doing more than 5-10 mph, you will get a grind. The faster you are going, the nastier the grind. I will say that it is not a rubber bushing or a linkage issue.

I will take a lot of pictures detailing every single aspect of this car and post the link since it will be too many for the forum. That is, I will post every repair I did, receipts, a number of pictures of every body panel, et cet. I will post a link of a video showing the shifting and driving thru the gears. I will be doing everything humanly possible to show the real nature and condition of the car to include detailed, specifics of each system. I try my best to adhere to the Golden Rule. I am offering driving the car up to 300 miles to the successful buyer from Columbia, SC. I will be selling the car at $5,900.00 FIRM and that includes the drive of up to 300 miles. Obviously, if I decide to sell it and no bites, then I will be putting it on E-bay with a reserve of $6,000.00 and watching the magic. If I don't sell it, I can still drive it every day since it has turned into a really nice car, but it's time to give the Mercedes hobby a rest and move onto some different non-MB projects.

I will not be parting it out and my price is firm. If folks perceive my price is too high (or any of the "normal" derisive commentary folks feel compelled to post), please refrain. The forces of supply and demand control pricing, not opinions. If I don't get any quotes, then it's a keeper to be sold another day.

Thanks for reading the very long thread. Please PM if interested.

Got-cha ... you're not muddying up anything. I just didn't get it. A slow this afternoon. LOL.

I definitely DO NOT want a Ranger under any circumstances. I am looking for something really small, with a 3 cylinder gas engine, like a older Metro in mint or near mint condition. I found a few, and they hover around $2,500 smackers.

Why the hate? I've only had an alternator die on me, and that was my fault (added a 1500W inverter). yeah the timing belt, but I should have done that before 160k

What about an escort or pinto (or foxbody, if you hate yourself)? The Lima 4 banger is on par with the 616 for durability in my book. Same power output too haha

Damn straight I have Macy's pricing! My work is the best in the world! Ask anyone who has seen the angle grinder patina on my parts Big Grin

No real hate ... just not what I am looking for. I want a GEO Metro, maybe a convertible, that has a 3 cylinder and stick. There were a lot of flavors of this make, EG Sprint, Suzuki Swift, et cet. A somewhat simple conversion of the carb to burn alcohol and my home made efforts to make alcohol are promising. Need to perfect the process to get 190 proof or better, but I am overall pretty happy with my first efforts. I have a 25 gallon stainless steel vessell, and I need to tinker with a 3 foot stack to get the proof up. I have a virtual unlimited supply of waste starches and other waste food products to distill the alcohol of from.

Look for one with low mileage or a rebuilt engine. Those 3 cylinder never made it much past 100k before they are worn out and started smoking. I work at a salvage yard that use to specialize in them. We just put a new engine in the Bosses 96 metro at 110k because It could not pass emission it was burning to much oil.

Yes ... thanks for the info. I see where the entire engine rebuild kits are around $250-$300. I am looking for the 3 cylinder turbo FI flavor. Right now I think I will be grabing one at the yard to disassemble, see how it ticks, and to start the rebuild process. I see one at the yards about every other month. So, for $100 bucks a pop for an engine, I plan on having one rebuilt and one in the process of being rebuilt. They seem super simple and simple to yank out of the engine bay.
