Hi, I'm new to the forum and also Merc diesels. I'm acquiring an 84 300d with 300I on it. It's costing me $900 for an entire car and allegedly it runs fairly well. Pretty sure it's the OM617.951 or 2, any thoughts on whether I'm getting shafted. The motor is for a transplant into a Jeep TJ.

maybe you ought to see the motor start, run, look at the blowby on cold and then hot motor.
Are you moving it right into the jeep? Or doing work on the motor outside the body?

$900 seems nearer the low end of the scale for w123 300d. But that doesnt mean that motor isint great.

Nice body, tons of ridiculous mechanical issues - 300d turbo 82' /motor 85'

The chassis is pretty spent and it's a salvage title...both big considerations as far as the price goes. I'd prefer to look the motor over but I'm stationed overseas and the car is being picked up by a friend back home. I'll have the time to tinker with the motor between engine bays since the Jeep is a running daily daily driver. What are some things that are essential to check out while I'm getting intimate with the Merc?

I paid $500 for a beater non-runner (just needed glow plugs & filters) with a clean title.

I'd see if they will come down on the price for the salvage title.

As for the motor, have a hot compression test done after adjusting the valves.

larsalan I guess I need to look at this stupid ass drip shit. What you have to like mess with those elements on the pump? What a fucking hassle. then use some wire to hold the throttle open or some shit?

could check on the turbo. Is it a turbo? Are you planning a different turbo?
If the one on there is all wobbley and the fins are shredded that's a bum deal. A huge hassle and expense to deal with if you had planned to leave that bit alone.

@simpler- good advice on both counts, I'm sure I can get a little off three price and I'll see what all I can get checked before I fork over the money

@lars- it is a turbo model, so I'll make sure the shaft play is in tolerance and the turbine blades are in good shape

You maybe can get some monies off extra parts and scraps. It seems to me the more rare parts are on very early or very late 300d. So like one I know of is the later 84-85 have a taller diff/speedo. Many people like that one, 2.88, instead of the most common 3.07.
Oh like you maybe have these 'better' prechambers as well. I'm sure somebody can chime in on those tiny details.
Also, I bet there is like $50 of copper in the dash.

I bet there's $200 worth of scrap iron in the body after you strip off all the parts and sell them.

I'll look into parting the old beast...I hate to destroy a classic, but I'm already ripping her heart out. If anyone else knows about some other rarities I should keep my eyes peeled for, I'd appreciate it.

I know one I need Wink
I have been asking as many people I can for a rear bumpstop, I just lack one.
If/when you get the car you can make a for sale/ parting a car thread here and peachpart.
See how many people you can help and how many extra $ come back to you.
