After looking for over a year, finally bought a 450SL (1980) automatic.
The vehicle is excellent with no rust anywhere.
The V8 engine runs, but smokes, but it doesn't matter because we wont use the V8, we're going to remove it.

My plan is to pull the original V8 gas engine and replace it with the OM617 5 cyl Turbo Diesel.

Off the top of my head, looks like the starter location on the V8 Transmission is located in roughly the same position as the OM617... but not 100% sure.

Haven't decided on which transmission to use (if the 450SL will in fact match the OM617).

Was thinking the OM617 torque converter would have the right stall speeds and as far as auto transmissions am not sure.

Any suggestions from some of you with more experience?

BTW have driven our 1986 Land Rover 110 pickup with intercooled OM617 TD about 5,000 miles and love it! Top speed is 69 - 72 MPH on flat ground with the boost set to 12 PSI, but that's another story... just love the OM617.

a w123 TD with a v8 would be awesome. You should consider modifying a power steering pump to power the SLS system on the wagon.

larsalan I guess I need to look at this stupid ass drip shit. What you have to like mess with those elements on the pump? What a fucking hassle. then use some wire to hold the throttle open or some shit?
