Am I correct in that the M pumps are used on the turbo engines while the MW pumps are used on the NA engines? What are the differences between the two?

The MW is used on every 240D, 300D sold in the USA. The M is used on non-turbo 240D and 300D models sold outside the USA. The only ways to get an M-pump in the USA are from a car brought here by gray market import or buying a spare one from Europe.

Performance-wise they are about the same, some claim smoother engine running with the M-pump. The M-pump has more plunger options for power, this is why they are so valuable.

This is the MW-pump that every USA-sold MB Diesel has.

This is the M-pump euro non-turbo models have.
