617. Engine junk?

So I was taking apart my junkyard 617 while trying to get things a bit cleaner and while I was trying to get the bolts out of the main crank pulley the engine turned. Put a 27 mm socket on it and I can turn it by hand. Glow plugs and injector have not been removed. I expect that this means the engine really is junk, with no compression. Am I right?

I can turn mine by hand without much trouble - I do have to put a little weight on the wrench every 144 degrees to get past a compression peak.

Well there is hope then. I am waiting to get hold of a compression tester. Should be next week.
Is it possible to check compression without spinning it by starter?
Anyone ever hooked up the starter and spun one of these on an engine stand. I could hook up the engine crane to the top for extra safety margin but I am still really leery of trying to turn it over while attached to an engine stand.

i wouldnt worry about it... somehow running it on the stand might be a little hairy, but turning it over shouldnt be a prob as long as everything is clear of the moving components...

i wouldnt worry about it... somehow running it on the stand might be a little hairy, but turning it over shouldnt be a prob as long as everything is clear of the moving components...
