Sounds like you bumped the pump pretty good, so you'll want to go with bigger and better flowing exhaust. My engine is stock '84 300D but I replaced the entire exhaust with a stainless steel straight pipe , no muffler or resonator. It is 2 1/2 in. to the axle, then 3 in. to the bumper. Gave me lots more upper end performance and sounds like a 6bt cummins! Actually too loud, so I made a resonator after the downpipe and it took it down a notch. Tig welded sanitary pipe from the scrapyard. You probably should go 3" or larger. I couldn't imagine the price for custom s.s. headers but sure would increase the flow .
