Hi huys im new here and I need a little help. I dont have a great deal of experience with diesel engines but I know my way around a car. I have a 190 2.5d (OM602) with a manual box and I think ive lost a cylinder somehow so im thinking of dropping an OM606 straight into it.
From what I gather, I need OM603 mounts from a W124 and possibly an OM603 IP. I can use the OM602 flywheel, clutch, gearbox and prop and the engine drops straight in and everything else connects straight to it except the exhaust.

Is that correct? Is there anything ive missed?

Can I not use the OM606 IP?

Thanks for your help guys!

606 Turbo has Electronic IP.

Only the 606 from the N/A W124 is Mechanical here in the UK.

As far as I know, All the W210 had electronic IP's....What car did it come from...?

Manual trans, flywheel, clutch etc, in W201 all will fit fine.

I suspect that the engine-mount arms from the OM.602 May be suitable--something you'll need to confirm....

Hey thanks for replying. Is it not possible to get the electronic IP working? I'm guessing you would need the ecu and loom and just plug it all in, or is it more complicated than that?

If its not possible then I'll be using an om606 from a w210 and an om603 IP.

Oh btw will I have problems with the downpipe? As I've read that the reason why Mercedes didn't build these with a turbo engine was because of clearance issues with the steering box.

It is possible to use the electronic IP. Most people consider it to be too much trouble. Why do you want it?

Not sure if someone's used a stock 606 in a rhd w201 before. It definitely fit fine with a different turbo situated higher. If you're lucky you might only have to do some awkward exhaust routing.

Ok thanks! I heard there was a bit of smoke when its off boost, thats why I was considering using the electronic IP.

I cant afford to build a high power car atm so i'll leave it stock for now and start upgrading it when I have the funds Wink

Is it worth bothering with removing the alda from an OM606 IP or should I just get an om603 IP?
Oh and does anyone make manifolds for these engines or is custom the only way?

The electronic 606 won't have an alda, that function was rolled into the ecu. And a properly working 603 setup should not smoke either, although it'll smoke if you remove the alda.

There's a place in finland that sells exhaust manifolds (T3 I think?) for around €700. Haven't seen ready-made intakes.

Excellent. So what does the alda on the om603 IP connect to? Do I need anything other than the IP from a om603?

Thanks I'll have a google for the manifold. The inlet manifold should be fine as it is, right? I may just end up making my own exhaust manifold if I need to Wink

The 603 ALDA connects via a tube/hose to the intake to receive boost pressure signal. So you'd have to fab up your own connection there. You will also need to somehow hook up the throttle linkage to the IP, either altering the 2.5 linkage or coming up with something else. The 606 intake is too different for any of the 603 linkage variants to work plug'n'play, although maybe NA606 linkage would be easier.

Note that if left stock om603 turbo IP is a 20hp drop from the om606 turbo IP. A good portion of that is recoverable if you are willing to pop the back cover off and do adjustments.

The exhaust manifold is here. There are also precut engine side flanges to build up your own manifold from for €120, someone did that here. The intake manifold's inlet is designed for the intercooled w210, so you will have large tubing that probably has nowhere to go on a w201. Either you fab up an intercooler with intercooler tubing or you grab an NA606 inlet manifold which has a crossover pipe directly to where the turbo would be (with less tubing to fab).

Thanks mate. Onto more questions lol...

Ive found an om606 from a w124 for sale for £350 including gearbox, diff etc. Sounds like a bargain!
Would this have an electronic IP?

Is it likely to be a .910 or .962? Whats the difference besides 20bhp?

Once again thanks for the help!

If a UK W124 car, it will be a OM.606.910/2 N/A engine, and most likely a Mechanical I.P.
--If Electronic, the Trans will probably be too, although I don't think the W124 ever had the 722.6 auto.....

The OM.606.961/2 were the Turbo engines found in W210, and all are electronic IP's and Transmissions.

£350 seems a lot for just the engine, get some history on it or haggle the price! Can it be seen running?
--Could prob get a MOT Failure for less than that, then you get the whole car!

As far as i know It's a uk w124 300td. Does that mean it will have electronic IP?
Im not fussed about the transmission as I'll be using my manual box from the 2.5d.

The whole car is for sale. It's been partially stripped, but all the mechanicals are there. I've been told I can have it for £350, possibly less if I haggle. I just wanted to know if I could use the IP before I went any further?

The ip is mechanical on all w124s. The NA engine is even less hp of course, 134 vs 177.

Ok ive found out its an om606 with an electronic IP. So that makes it an om606.962.

So now I need to get an om603 IP and possibly new inlet and exhaust manifolds. I hope im able to get away with the stock exhaust manifold!

How much should I be expecting to pay for an om606.962 with 130k and history?

Electronic does not automatically imply .962, there were two years of electronic nonturbo engines.

Ive made a deal with the guy for £200 for the engine, but i'll have to remove it from the car myself. Should I grab anything else off the car whilst im there? Do I need any wiring or electrical bits? Will the brakes off a w124 fit a w201?

Hi, just reading your thread, I'm building something similar with my w201, I'm using the calipers off a w124 coupe 300-24 which uses 295mm discs and these calipers: European Rotating calipers

Good luck with the build Wink

I haven't gotten that far yet, will be looking into it this weekend possibly. I'd guess just some interesting exhaust routing... failing that I have a spare w210 steering rack which I could butcher to fit... but I'm not keen on that option, it would attract a lot of attention from the re-test people.

Same problem with the conversion itself to diesel, I don't want to modify the bulkhead as that would also attract a lot of attention.

hi,
i'm putting a om606 into a w202, haven't done much yet but i think it will fit ok as the w202 came with 6 cyclinder petrol, w201 came with a 6 cylinder as well. Any idea if the 0m606 is much longer than the petrol 6 ?

also was thinking of fitting w210 rack and subframe as i was going for wide arches.

There is a video of a w202 with an om606 fitted which shows the engine bay. I think they used radiator brackets from a 6cyl petrol to reposition it under the slam panel, to give a bit of extra clearance.

Looks like there is more room up front on the w202, I know HughF has had to "modify" the bulkhead a little to fit the OM606 in his W201... Are there different mounts available that might shift it further forward to avoid having to do this? Maybe W124?

For my OM603 in a W201,

M103/OM603 W124 Mounts higher and further back (hood clearance) then the M103 W201 Mount.
Have to have a modded w124 front swaybar to clear the oil pan.
Use a radiator that mounts inside the core support.
Driveshaft might have to be shortend by about 1"

HughF has used the OM606 engine-mounts onto W201 mounts, and it fits, however it sits quite far back and Hugh has had to bash the firewall a bit so it doesn't touch. I've only glanced at this so don't quote me. He's using a cosworth manual box, whereas I'm sticking with the 722.6 auto box from W210.

I'm interested in seeing how different W124 mounts are in relation to W210... anyone have any pics?

So is there anyone who has successfully managed to get the exhaust sorted whilst using the standard exhaust manifold? I just want to know if it's possible as I don't have £600+ to spunk on a kkd!

Nielsychop could you post a few pics please showing how much space there is to play with?

If you're using the standard manifold with the standard kkk turbo I think you can use existing 190 manifold-back pipe, but it would be restrictive. From eye measuring there's about 20cm of pipework that may need to be fab'd to connect turbo to 190 downpipe.
I may go this route to test it out before going bigger pipe... It looks like maybe only a few hours work to make something to connect the two; cut off old w210 turbo back pipe, weld on reducer to a two bolt flange to mate to existing exhaust.

Next time i'm at Hugh's I'll take pics or tell him to get on here, I'm not that far yet (It's my daily), but hopefully gonna test fire my 603 IP tomorrow.
