Not a body mod, but checking out my center console for a double din DVD player and wondered if anyone has done one already? Trying to avoid the pitfalls traps etc etc

Afraid to post this on benzworld and offend the purists Undecided

Double din obviously would not go in without some serious modifying of the console, particularly around the the AC controls (obviously). One may consider the possibility of a DVD player head unit that has a screen that rotates out of a single DIN unit. They are much more expensive of course, but could be a solution given the head unit has enough room in the rear.

Used to run a car audio install company, so thinking its just a matter of relocating the heater controls but haven't opened up the console yet. Will keep you informed

The heater controls are electrical vacuum switches-they don't need 2 bays to operate. You will spend some time but they can be chopped down.

what would be extremely cool is if made a touch screen page that looked like the heater controls from the stock setup, but you could control them through the screen layout and just eliminate the stock controls behind the screen.

I would really like to see someone go the route of messing with the HVAC controls. I’m too much of a wimp to attempt to even try to get my AC to work. But it would be a real milestone if one was able to get a touch screen in there.

Ya was thinking remove the ashtray - dont smoke anyways - move the heater controls down there and install the double din where the heater controls and stereo currently sit.

Would put the screen up higher and in plain sight, and not have to cut up the heater controls too much - already got a second set of controls to play with - other than trying to install a boost gauge or something right in the middle.

Going to tear it apart next week - I work 4 on and 4 off and heading back to work tonight so no time this week - and measure it all up. Might have to buy some real wood to make the center console, or some carbon fiber looking paper to finish it off.

Will post pictures when its done incase someone else wants to try

Yes I am trying to decide how to finish it off - woodgrain or otherwise. When I get a moment I will post some pictures.

i took off my ac controls to see if i could put my headunit in that space but there was a bunch of electrical crap right behind it, how did you get around them? did you move all the elecrical stuff or did you set the headunit a lower to clear the elecrtics, cause right now my head unit is down where the ashtray is, but i would like to move it up to where the ac controls are

You could try to find a taxi console on ebay or something.

It's bigger than double DIN, but they usually come with an insert that make them double DIN. The ash tray is moved to the rear with a cool hatch that opens front and back. I imagine it would be nice for hiding switches for stuff.

I have this in my W124, which I am regrettably having to scrap due to rust. Sad
