I have done a thing or two with diesels in my life but am completely new to the mercedes thing. My question is... How much engine compartment room do these cars have? Would a common rail cummins fit in a 190 or 300? I like the idea of the smaller car but is not a huge issue. What do the factory power plants from these cars weigh? Obviously the cummins is gonna be a bit bigger...

They've fit a LS1's and M117's into a 190E if that gives you any idea of the size engine it can take. Also RB26DETT's, SR20's, 1 & 2 GZTGE. Almost anything can fit with alittle modification of the engine bay and transmission tunnel. Personally I perfur the 190 chassis to the 300 for various reasons. But the real issues will be with the Axles/Diff finding one that can take that kind of punishment (custom). Chassis could take it no problems.

It won't fit into either without major work on the firewall. Then you'll have the problems of it weighing more than twice any MB engine and darn near 3/4 the vehicle's weight on the front wheels.

With that much work for either, you might as well use the 190 so you have more suspension and body options.
