The sound of the valve train on these engines drives me up the wall. Both of my cars were missing the hood pad. How much does the hood pad help? Has anyone here replaced their hood pad? I'm not about to pay $80 for one off of Mercedes source. Any suggestions? Anything that doesn't work?

Would some generic foam for furniture cushions from a fabric store work?

-1982 300D Turbo, 280k miles, ALDA apparently maxxed, fram 8038, 12 lbs boost, non-egr manifolds, W/M injection, 4 brake light mod, Gen II w126 front rotors/calipers, 4-speed swap
In the works: A/W IC, adjust pump, turbo rebuild (w/60 trim comp wheel)
-1980 300SD, 110k, project car. Goal is to get it lookin' like it did on the showroom floor (body and interior wise, not necessarily under the hood )
-1974 240D, FRESH PAINT!!!!!!

maybe will end up in the way of your throttle linkage, careful. I messed with it b4 with some glue and carpet and it was a problem.

I don't know about how mean they sound. They do sound good to me, but my girl and all her friends called my last one the bubble machine... Being able to hear the turbo is nice, but I obsess over the valve train when I can hear it. Every time I start the thing I stand and listen for some tick or clatter that may or may not exist. I'm pretty happy with the "new" one with stock exhaust and intake. The reason I got rid of the stock intake on the last one was because it was a complete rattle trap. For whatever reason if something is squeaking or rattling I can't force myself to ignore it and I wind up driving around with the radio and the heat off so I can give my undivided attention to how annoying it is...
