I need to remove the insturment cluster in my sd to finnish replacing the ignition lock at the steering collum, and repair the odometer, I recall some hidden attachment in my parts car, but can't find it! What am I missing?

Also, the odometer quit a while back, is there a simple repair? My BMWs have a plastic gear that gives up, is this something similar?

There is no hidden attachment. It just slides out, you need to hook it or push it out from behind though.

The odo is just like your bmw.

When I pulled the cluster in my w123 the speedo cable didn't have very much slack so I had to kind of pull on the cluster and work my hand behind it to loosen the cable, then it came right out

-1982 300D Turbo, 280k miles, ALDA apparently maxxed, fram 8038, 12 lbs boost, non-egr manifolds, W/M injection, 4 brake light mod, Gen II w126 front rotors/calipers, 4-speed swap
In the works: A/W IC, adjust pump, turbo rebuild (w/60 trim comp wheel)
-1980 300SD, 110k, project car. Goal is to get it lookin' like it did on the showroom floor (body and interior wise, not necessarily under the hood )
-1974 240D, FRESH PAINT!!!!!!

I went to the trouble of buying the tools from Mercedessource. They work great, but they're nothing that you can't make on your own. Essentially they're a bent piece of wire with a t-handle. Get a wire hanger and bend it up. Probably a loop to hold on one end, about 6" of straight wire, then a bend of about 100-110 degrees a quarter inch from the end. Slip them in just above where the cluster starts taper inward, turn the hooks toward the cluster and wiggle it out.

When I got the OEM tools they were $14...

All these fancy tools you guys use and make. All I did was grind off most of two nail heads and clamped them in vise grips. Then insert, turn and pull.

By the way, you can get away with one if you can't find both of them. I think someone used my tool as a nail. Could you imagine that? Hmm, wonder why there's not much head on this nail? Oh well, it'll do. Bam, bam, bam...

I just don't push mine all the way back in and work at it for a minute with my fingers to get it out, and when that doesn't work I just push it out from the back

Vicinity of Tacoma, Washington, an hour south of Seattle. Yes, the electric wiring.
