How necessary is it to have the vacuum drive plate installed on the timing device? I'm completely removing & blocking off my vacuum pump, do I have to keep that plate (with the "rollercoaster" driver) installed? Can I completely ditch the plate and bolts?

larsalan I guess I need to look at this stupid ass drip shit. What you have to like mess with those elements on the pump? What a fucking hassle. then use some wire to hold the throttle open or some shit?

I am in that process now, and to remove the pump, a "cap" will have to be made that permits the cam and bolt to stick out but be covered.

I'm making a cover from the old vacuum pump housing-I'm cutting it off and welding a cup on it. I'll get some photos up one of these days!

Cool. I got a fellow forum member making me the cat's pajamas version. The Audi electric vacuum pump is a nice option.

I believe that the plate with the vacuum pump "roller Coaster" is also the retaining plate for the timing device and you can't remove it.
Has anyobdy ran a 617 without the vacuum pump, there is a brass bushing with a thrust surface behind that drive that the IP drive shaft goes through. If the pump isn't on there it might possible for the sprocket to move axially without the vacuum pump to keep tension on it. If so that could causse premature chain wear?

So, do you think that something will need to push against that cam from the vacuum pump side of things ?

TO be honest i'm not really sure, I just rebuilt my OM617 and was thinking about removing my vacuum pump. That's when I noticed that the pump keeps that shaft pushed back, maybe somebody else has done this and knows 100% the answer.

There are photos of a motor somewhere with a factory blockoff plate, it should be okay without the vacuum pump. gauging by the wear marks on the plate, it looks like it helps retain the IP timing device. I'll leave it in place for the time being.

PLATE ??? The cam (whatever you call it) sticks out almost 1 1/2" (I used a Craftsman 19mm socket as my measuring device at the junkyard when I started this R&D). I plan on keeping that cam and bolt, just getting rid of the vacuum pump altogether. Can you remove the entire bolt and cam?

As I understand it, the cam is part of the "Timing Device" for the injection pump. I chose to cut off the lobes for a weight savings/ improved balance and reinstalled it:
