Thinking about selling my extra W123, a '79 240D with a slushbox and electric windows/sunroof. The engine only has 177,XXX miles, and that is pretty much the only good thing about the car. The body is in rough shape, and it's missing the rear passenger window, and the hood is currently not attached to the car and the grille is kind of smashed a little. Also there is a dent in the driver's door from being in a wreck. My question is how much money can I expect to get for it? Im gonna try to sell it to the Industrial Technology department for an alternative fuel experimentation class (focusing on WVO, gassification, electric, and other hybrids) and am thinking about asking $500. I think this is fair because Im the one who filled out and submitted the applicationg for the grant that got the money to pay for the class lol

-1982 300D Turbo, 280k miles, ALDA apparently maxxed, fram 8038, 12 lbs boost, non-egr manifolds, W/M injection, 4 brake light mod, Gen II w126 front rotors/calipers, 4-speed swap
In the works: A/W IC, adjust pump, turbo rebuild (w/60 trim comp wheel)
-1980 300SD, 110k, project car. Goal is to get it lookin' like it did on the showroom floor (body and interior wise, not necessarily under the hood )
-1974 240D, FRESH PAINT!!!!!!

It might bring $400 on Craigslist here, so $500 in California sounds about right.

Gone but not forgotten: two W123 sedans and two W124 wagons.
W124 1987 300TD wagon, for sale, $1000 (some assembly required).

That is pretty well close to scrap value $400-500. Just sell a few pieces off and then scrap the rest for $275-300/tn would get you that price.
$500 is absolutely fair

Larsalan is on the money. Figure out what is selling, or can be stripped to be sold or used down the road, e.g., glass, interior stuff, et cet., and get your 1 1/2 tons worth of metal. My .02 cents worth.

(01-05-2012, 07:00 PM)larsalan ...scrap the rest for $275-300/tn...

Wow, $275-300/ton? Around here, right now, $130 a ton is all the large yards pay, down from $160 a ton last October. Gyppo scrapper guys driving homebrew wreckers pay a flat $300 for any not-already-stripped car which they come to you to haul away. I have a 1987 Cutlass I'd like gone from my driveway. Runs and drives just fine, everything works on it, I can't sell it on Craigslist for $500. I asked a scrap guy if he would still pay me $300 to haul it away if I first extracted the battery, alternator, and electric window motors. No deal, said he.

In Cali, these cars are purrrttty cheap.
The most ive ever spent on one is $900, bought one for $700, one for $600 a few for $400..
The most ive ever sold one for was $900, and i sold two 240D's too people off this site for $200 each.
Id say 400-500 is fair.

Thanks guys!! My friend was gonna buy the car to use the motor to power a big ass generator head he was gonna buy but went with smaller ones instead. The car runs fine, its just nothing to look at. I talked to the professor of the alternative fuel class and he said he would be interested in buying it for the class at $500 if I could get more opinions about how much it was worth so he won't be responsible if somebody gets irritated

I always surf around on CL looking at old clunkers and thinking how they could be repowered. But you cant get a dirt cheap body because scrap is so high people might as well have them crushed.

Coincidentally, I now have a 1979 240D for sale, kinda beat up but the odo only reads 177,XXX and the two times I drove it it ran and shifted fine (its got a slushbox), Im gonna post it on CL for $500 but I'll let it go on here for less if anybody is interested. Pretty much the only reason I dont want it anymore is because its taking up space in the yard and there are back fees on the registration, and I cant really afford to fix it AND drive it, so I can either have the cake and not eat it OR not have the cake and not eat it

I can get pictures to anybody who wants them

Yes lol, but it shifts like the cat's pajamas, waaay nicer than my 300, and Im guessing it still has a lot of good miles on it since the odo only erady about 171k miles

I've had about 4 people respond to the ad, and the most promising person is located 4 miles south of me and wants to trade for a 14karat mens ring lol, seems pretty tempting if we can get shipping arranged

put it on ebay as a parts car. probably get 4-500 for it there, minus the fee of 40 something bucks. I just sold a set of hubcaps that I had listed on the forums and local craigslist for months at 30 bucks and no one wanted, and they sold for 65 on ebay with tons of interest.

(02-01-2012, 12:58 AM)sassparilla_kid FAAAAAAACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am stuck with this stupid car, nobody wants to buy it, and then when they do they end up flaking out. The most promising offer was a guy in southern california that wanted to trade me a gold wedding band for it, but I was gonna have to get triple a to tow it down there so I didn't go through with it. So if anybody is interested in a '79 240 Im lowering the price to $400 lol

put it on ebay as a parts car. probably get 4-500 for it there, minus the fee of 40 something bucks. I just sold a set of hubcaps that I had listed on the forums and local craigslist for months at 30 bucks and no one wanted, and they sold for 65 on ebay with tons of interest.

Wow I might have to try posting there then, since everybody on craigslist keeps lowballing, even after I lowered the price

-1974 240D, FRESH PAINT!!!!!!

ebay classically is where everybody buys ridiculously over inflated priced 123s. Just another option to consider, and of course there are plenty of scammers like all the internet sales sites, but I consider it a worthwhile method because of the much larger potential customer base.

They do whack you for listing, and a final value fee. I haven't listed a car there in a couple years where before it was 40 bucks or something, but I have one for sale at the moment, so I should see what I get charged for an updated completed sale listing and can post back.
