Hi all.
I am finally starting my project with my W123 280TE, introducing a 300td 1998 OM606 turbodiesel engine (and maybe automatic trans) to the car, which I restored last winter.
I want to keep the relatively acceptable fuelconsumption on the OM606 engine, and therefore I want to keep the engine controls/electronic fuelpump as it is. My question is, does anybody know, if I can put af manual gearbox on that engine, without to much trouble with the engine management system???

I don't think there's anything special in the electronic system regarding fuel consumption. Half of the pump is exactly the same as the old mechanical pump. It's not capable of doing anything special like say the CDIs do.

Okay, so you think I should go for a mechanical governored pump, and throw away all the engine mangement system? I think that that the electronic controlled IP will give me better fuel economy. My question is really if there is anyone who know if it is possible to ad a swab a manual gearbox for the automatic, and keep the electronics on the engine... Thanks for your reply and interest. Jens

There's no economy advantage to the electronic injection pump. It will cause you much more work and return no benefit for your project. I know of one person here who swapped in a manual transmission and somehow fooled the computer on a 1997 but I don't know any details.

1998 MB E300 - 194,000 miles. Current/future mods: 7.5mm pump elements, Holset HX40 Turbo feeding Eaton M90 supercharger through custom fabbed intake system. Aeroturbine muffler, scratch-built 4" stainless exhaust. EGR eliminated, ECM recalibrated, modified rack position feedback circuit. Porterfield RS brake pads, Bilstein sport shocks, VDO EGT, oil and boost gauges.

2000 Ford F250 - 150,000 miles. Current/future mods: DP Tuner 3 map chip, scratch-built high flow intake, high output IDM, open circuit fuel system, ball bearing turbo, South Bend full metal clutch, slotted and drilled rotors. Autometer Sport Comp EGT and boost gauges.

I do believe that the electronic injection system gives a economy advantage, as I have been driving the W210 300td with very good economy, compared to a W124 OM603a turbo, my experience is that the W210 is better due to the electronic management system.
I want to keep the electronics, and change out the auto tranny to a manual W124 5 speed gearbox. Please can you recall who this person is, who managed to fool the computer? / cheers... Jens

It's more efficient because of the 24v vs 12v.

This following is skimpy on details. I'm guessing there weren't much electrical issues since all he complains about is a lack of cruise.

Smile Thanks a lot to both of you, that helped a lot! As I have a manual gearbox in my w123 I have to chose between 1 of the 2 options...
1- W210 Engine+automatic tranny+all electronics without changing anything into the W123 means changing the car to automatic.
2- W210 Engine+ 5 speed manual box, change the wiring and flywheel (pickups)...
I will think about it, right now I am into option 1.... What do you guy's think?

Since the auto already has overdrive and and a partially locking TC, it already has most of the fuel consumption benefits the manual would bring.

Okay, :-) I have given it some thoughts today, and I have decided to go for the whole package, auto transmission, and all the electrics i can get into the w123... that way I will have the cruise control as well.
