When I get the car up to a certain amount of RPM's (not as high as it would normally take to upshift if the pedal is fully depressed), there's a hesitation where it feels like although the accelerator is floored, somebody is tapping on the brake randomly and it fails to accelerate to a speed where it will upshift without lifting the accelerator for a moment. Maximum speed of the vehicle is thus limited to around 65mph. Problem is magnified when hitting any sort of incline, even a slight hill will cause it to get a lot worse.

You can shift it into neutral and rev much higher without any problem. Transmission fluid level is good and the fluid appears clean.

Any ideas what the problem could be? It's quite infuriating.

Car is a 1980 300D (non-turbo).

I would start with fuel filters and a valve adjustment

hi,
any luck?
Get someone to press gas pedal down full and check pump to make sure you are getting full travel to the stopper.

Yes, I think the fuel filters fixed it. The primary was full of thick black crud. But as soon as I replaced them, my harmonic balancer fell off. So now I'm attending to bigger problems. Sad
