Is it possible to get turbo-like or better performance out of a non-turbo 300D engine?

I've got an '82 300CD, but it's engine developed piston slap. Sad

I found an amazing deal on an '80 300D with 81k miles (few hundred bucks). Can I transplant this in to the 300CD and somehow get equal or better performance out of it? Can a turbo be added or are there other ways? Or should I just save up for a good replacement .952 engine?

I've also getting an '83 200D with an OM615.940. The goal of that car is not to go fast, but to be as fuel-efficient as possible. Anything I can do to increase efficiency or add performance without negatively affecting the efficiency?

Weight reduction. Driving style.
Maybe add a turbo? That is up for debate but the first 2 will for sure be more efficient.

Rusted out beat down 300d turbo 82' -- RIP
Nice body, tons of ridiculous mechanical issues - 300d turbo 82' /motor 85'

"driving style"??? Don't see how that's going to increase my performance. Unless you mean "keep it in the lowest gear possible at all times", heh...

I heard it's not safe to add a turbo to a non-turbo OM617 as they redesigned the engine to provide better cooling, etc. on the turbo models. Oh well. I'm just going to restore the 300D a bit and pass it along. The 300CD I'd like to be speedy. I found an OM606 from a 1996 E300D for sale - can that mate up with the existing transmission?

The 200D is just for commuting, it's just going to be interesting with 59hp. I drove a W115 240D for a long time (my first and longest-lived Mercedes), probably not much different.

you can not use the 617,616 trans on a 603,606 the starter is on the wrong side but you can bolt up a 6spd manual to the 606

1987 300SDL 6spd manual om606.962 swap project
1985 300td euro 5spd wagon running

Oh, I am reading wrong and thinking your goal is fuel efficiency. But that is on the second car.
