Installed new a/c system,82-300sd,high side pressures too high, too hot, engine temps.ok. system never cooled well, even with larger fan, turned on soon. Remedy; installed later model condenser,50 cooling tubes compared to 32. Works much better! Donner car gasser Mbz ? High side line same, Low side bottom(different). Have one hose made $30. Use part of old low side line for 90 degrees fitting to run up and along frame rail in front of compressor to manifold. Small amount of adjusting to clear oil cooler.
Works for me,thought I"d pass it on.

Yes,R134a retro. Used condenser out of 87 420se Mbz if I remember correct. Same mountings, only diff. is low side hose inners at bottom.

The '84 and '85 300SD had a larger fan and an upgraded condenser from the '82. That should be a direct bolt on, but still used R12. Not sure about the tube count, but definitely more then the '82 version.

The dual fans of the later w126 should work wonders also.

Up graded to the large v-8 fan several years ago. Yes the later 300sd condenser was an up grade, but not much, would still present same problem, high head pressures, low cooling. Mbz had been fighting this problem for years.Every year or two an up graded condenser. I love direct bolt-in,but in this case just does not work. This swap was quite easy, only one new hose, and
some adjustments, plus drill one hole, for hose hold down clamp. A/c now gets cold, holds temp.well at idle, pressures acceptable.

Thanks for input, have received good Ideas from here. Dual fans, yes, have been pondering that, but will most likely need to upgrade alternator first. Do want to save a/c from problems. ( I like my COOL ).
