Hi all,

I'm upgrading my 280E's brakes to 2nd Gen W126 brakes, braided hoses, and new copper pipes.
I'm thinking of refilling the system with either DOT 5, or 5.1 brake fluid.

My question is, 1 of these is silicone based, the other isn't, so is silicone based brake fluid safe to use in a non-ABS W123?

Yes it is safe, BUT...... DOT 5 silicone based is not compatible with DOT 3, 4, or 5.1. So you need to thoroughly clean out every seal, nooks and crannies in the system to prevent a chemical reaction that will cause solids to precipitate and lead to brake system failure.

Thanks, THB most of the brake system is going to be either new or reconditioned, so I shouldn't have any issues with contamination.

i plan on changing all my lines over to copper , they sell it at my brake spot. stuff lasts forever.
have you experienced line flex with copper?

There is "Cunifer" brake line that is a Copper Nickle Alloy, easy to bend and corrosion resistant.

Cunifer tubing is worth every penny. Much easier to work with than stainless and it doesn't corrode line regular cheapo steel lines.

When my next brake service comes I plan on running DOT5, you should be flushing the system anyway....

Copper brake pipe has been used in brake lines for decades without any problems at all, thats why they sell it. Cunifer is still better though although it is harder to flare but still easy enough.

Copper brake pipe has been used in brake lines for decades without any problems at all, thats why they sell it. Cunifer is still better though although it is harder to flare but still easy enough.

Cooper is the only thing we have used in Sweden since Hitler made cars. ALOT of winter and alot of salt on roads makes the steelines disapere quick.

Easy to flare and bend. The only down thing to steel is that you shouldnt use the "cutting ring" type adapter. Its bound to leak, sooner or later.

I am alot more skeptical to silicon brakefluid :/ My friend did a complete overhaul on his b11 Citroen (sorry for cursing). One year later all the hoses was pluged up. They was dissolved from inside. Maybe it was bad hoses or something but i will never use it after his warning.
