The thread subject says it all...my beloved crusty old W210 is toast after a collision this past Wednesday AM. 211k miles on it...ugh. I miss it greatly and it has only been a few days.

Anywho - the reason I'm posting: I have the option to buy it back...but it ends up being a ~$2k purchase and I'm being met with great opposition from the CFO (wife). She just wants me to take the larger (+ ~$2k...) settlement amount and run to the nearest used car lot and buy something, anything as a DD...then save the rest for a rainy day. This goes against nearly ever fiber of my being because I'm a die hard car guy and would rather part it out than take the easy route. Grrrrr...women.

Anyone need any parts from this? I'm trying to build a case for buying it back. Sure, I know I could get $1200-$1500 for the engine alone...but what's the rest of the thing worth? The transmission can't be sold for anything but a core since the 3-4 shift was still messed up. The body on the side that wasn't damaged is nothing to write home about...the interior was pretty nice...no rips or anything...

Thanks for letting me vent. Big Grin

Cheers,

Matt

Man if I had money(which I have almost none of ) I would take the om606 off your hands. That motor is what made me want to get a diesel merc.

Get out comealong, plywood, screws and plexiglass and rebuild her! You can rebuild her better, stronger, faster! Seems like the perfect opportunity for an engine swap to me, get ahold of a nice older merc (hell even a gasser) and go to town on it. Could probably get into one with a blown engine for 500 bucks.

That's exactly what I did. Cool

I found a clean '95 W124 with a blown OM606 in my area on craigslist and went to look at it IMMEDIATELY. I beat out a fellow STD member who also wanted it. Sorry, Dave!

Both rigs are in my garage as I type this. The W210 was delivered this afternoon. It's such a shame to see that car with all the damage.

Let the fun begin! I'm probably going to run the seemingly good 4-speed auto in the W124 for a while - then upgrade to either a 6-speed or do the GM 4L80-E conversion I had my heart set on for the W210 before I crashed it.

Matt

Well, the OM606 in the W124 sure has its fair share of issues. Rolleyes

The previous owners took it to a few different places - one place thought it was the injection pump, another place thought it was the glow plugs (all 6 are allegedly new as a result). So the mechanic that changed the glow plugs also said it had low compression and a noise in the lower end of the engine. The previous owners could not recall which cylinder(s) had bad compression.

I took the intake manifold crossover pipe off so I could access the injectors. With the engine idling, I did an old fashioned cylinder cutout test. Loosening the injector line for #2 resulted in the idle barely changing at all - so that hole has some issues. I could not access #5 since the CCV filter was blocking access.

Here's where things get interesting. When I rev'd the engine up very slightly - it would backfire a little bit through the intake. Not to mention, the sound coming from the intake was a little strange just at an idle - it sounded like it was pumping exhaust into the intake.

In addition to this, the #2 intake runners were quite warm after idling for a short time. So, methinks there is an intake valve or two on that cylinder that is stuck open. The knock only rears its ugly head > 2000 RPM...and it's nasty...probably the piston making contact with a valve or two on #2. Bummer.

No biggie, the OM606.962 out of the W210 is alive and well - the crash didn't affect it at all. It needs new glow plugs, though - I'm not looking forward to that job. Undecided

If it jumped time, I'd assume that the knock would be present at an idle and it definitely is not. It does run on 5 out of 6 cylinders all the time, however. Shakes like crazy at an idle...

First order of business is to do the engine swap...after that, I can dig into the NA OM606 a bit and see what's up.

lol, I don't know why women even try and argue with a hobby. I find it amusing that not only do you suddenly have the original car back, but also another car that might need repair.

No doubt she was thinking that wrecked car would disappear, not spawn. It seems that the majority of women would be happy if everyone was driving around in a 2 year old beige Hyundai.

I think this would be different if my garage was smaller and my project(s) displaced her parking spot due to lack of space. As it is right now, there are 4 vehicles out there and room for other garage related things. Her hobby is expensive (equestrian stuff) - so she understands that side of things.

Man, that last comment is SO true. She has a taste for finer cars (thanks to my coaching), but she's perfectly content driving an econobox. I hate her car...but she loves it.
