Im currently working on building my own external Air/Oil Separator.
my OM617 has the standard UFO which eats a lot of room and has a somewhat faulty separator.

Im looking into buying an 1985 DRY filter California Air Cleaner as shown in the picture below.

Im not into Hot Air Intakes or Gay and N crap.
If it turns out that the Cali version DRY air cleaner assemblies are too much money or hard to find I will be adapting a different Sealed Paper Filter from a small Ford pick up or something.

Another easy opt of course would be to leave the current UFO and cap the top PCV lid hole as shown below.

The prob with this setup is that I dont want to cancel the oem OIL return line as I would like to make the UFO reversible for a future BENZ geek. This would also make it hard to return oil to sump from my external separator.

Yeah, Im considering that also. I spoke to FI just yesterday regarding his set up, if anything I will build a heat shield around the paper FRAM. Im not trying to spend too much money!

OK. got my CA8037 and would like to share that Im working on creating a complete "cold" sealed filter assembly (heat shield) crap for it. I thought about using a regular 5 gallon bucket as a starting point but fitting was a pain. (this sucks as I thought it looked real bitching).


Soda Cracker container was also kind of a little too big plus $6 dollars for a single can was not w/in my budget.

So Im taking the cheap, easy and practical route. $3.00 worth of baking tins double stacked and $2.00 Dryer duct. Keep in mind that this is just mock ups, eventually it will be all tightly sealed, jb welded, painted black, wrapped in thermo tape etc. I will be notching a hole on the upper side of the duct where I plan to hook up the factory intake pipe and utilize the function of the factory air intake hood by using a $1.00 cup cape pouring tin as the fitting.

"Voila"!!!!!! Sealed intake!

I ended up using 8" x 6 feet Sakrete Cement Form Tube.
$6.00 Smackers at the Hoe-Depot. It fits like a glove w/ a perfect 1/2" air gap btwn the filter plus its hard enough to crack someone silly. This should drop right in! I will be wrapping the outside using Radiant Heat Foil.I played with that thing today and was able to see a -10 degree temp reduction inside the housing.

Tomorrow I will take air temperature readings of stock UFO to use as comparison later on..

Regarding using an already made Donaldson Style Radial Air Cleaner, not an option for me.

Too much money plus they are bulky. Would be sweet to plumb it inside the cabin though, but again, just not worth all the work. I will be using a Gutter Spout to hook up to the factory air scoop.

Here is my end idea jacked from Dodge Cats. Mine will be horizontal and will hook up directly to factory scoop thing.

Im having trouble finding an 8" lid for both ends.
I say "lids" because filter does eventually have to be removable. At least one side!
Any suggestions? The temperatures taken today by the way were very inconsistent. only 2-3 degree difference back and forth btw OEM vs SEALED FRAM. At this point its fair to say that radiant temps are practically the same inside each assembly. (that is the heat radiates the same inside both units). Keep in mind im taking temps with out air flow, basically sitting still.

Ultimately what will really matters is how well I can seal the FRAM in comparison to the OEM. Maybe my only possible advantage over the OEM is that the Fram will be placed further away from the TURBO, EXHAUST etc vs the OEM sitting directly atop them.


Further, I am 100% positive at this point that semi open or exposed after market filters will never pull cooler air than OEM sealed units. I have looked at like 10 different real life studies done where it is demonstrated that 40% hotter air will be sucked into exposed filters.


This has me questioning weather or not this project even makes sense. LOL
I would rather keep the UFO if that is the outcome.

Sure it will look and sound pretty but bump that! The way I see it, if your MPG has not increased after installing an exposed filter then u are not sucking in colder air.

Is there any reason why I cant send the "clean" exit air line from my external separator right into the old location of the OEM ufo lid? This would in essence give me dual separators? 8)

Will this cause probs of some sort?

Sounds fine, I just assume leave those hot gasses on the road. And i cant believe you're keeping the ufo. If you have the fram just put it up by the headlight. That's gotta be colder than that oem filter hugging your turbo. I think I might work on damming up the airflow on my 8038 so it pulls just from the grill area. Maybe some luan or notebook covers sheilding away from the motor/turbo.

Damn! Overlooked something way obvious. Where can I get the rubber 90 elbow to connect my 5/8 ID hose on the valve cover? I been to all major auto parts and none carry that 3/4" 90 degree elbow. Any suggestions? I don't want to cut the original vent hose, plus it's squared shaped on my 85 model.

I think 82 back or something had an elbow as fitment. Could someone
Confirm what years or models? Tomorrow I'll take a trip to local wholesaler and check my opts, if all fails I'll hop over to junkyard!

I would think that would be a benefit at highway speed when that turbo is hovering around 700-900 deg* directly under the UFO!

Was just told the 3 piece breather hose has been discontinued! WTF !
It's just a simple rubber 90.
Bump all this, im going to use a 5/8" barb 90 to a 1/2 npt then fit a 3/4 hose on the valve cover and clamp all this shit down!!

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!

Changed the location of the oil separator. It now spews to the side on the front right fender-well through the Cali. Air hole location. The previous set up had couple issues.

:To close to the exhaust manifold.
:Return line was hitting Turbo U tube.
:Top of separator was rubbing the hood to much for my liking.


Most of all, the separator will now stay cooler and will be much more easily accessible.
