Recently noticed some nice examples of wrapped exhaust, and was wondering if a turbo blanket would be appropriate for a stock turbo...

Thoughts on turbo blankets?

I saw one of those Scandinavian guys on here had a picture with one. He has a gold color car, not sure of his name. And it might not have been the stock turbo either.

Wrapping a turbine with an insulating blanket decreases the amount of heat energy radiating from it, forcing more heat energy to pass through the turbine. Hot exhaust is expansive, and directing more heat through a turbine wheel will cause it to spin faster, increasing spool and engine power.

Basically the more heat the more energy. If that stays in the turbine housing and exhaust manifold with an exhaust wrap, the more energy you will have available to spin the turbocharger.

But the fine line is higher EGTs is not what your after, but keeping heat in is what you want. The other drawback is the possibility in keeping heat in is reduced turbo life and possible warping of exhaust manifold and turbo housing.

Just to be sure, when I meant exhaust wrap, I meant exhaust manifold wrap. You might want to try a coating also.

i would not do it if you have the factory exhaust system will likely have enough backpressure to raise egt's.

with a high flow exhaust, a wrapped/coated mani/header, and/or blanketed turbo is almost always good!

My turbo is wrapped and the exhaust manifold is coated. I think both are good things and my egt's are fine- since they are controlled with my right foot with consultation from my cabin gauge.

Go for it, i have been running turbo "blanket" for over an year now. I have blanket on few high tuned cars, turbo spools sooner, keeps temperature peaks milder and under hood temps in control.

Not to jack your thread but...
I just saw some exhaust tape on amazon, 15 ft for like $9-$15.
Think it's worth wrapping my down pipe? Couldn't hurt right. How does that stuff stay on, with a pipe clamp?
What would work better 1in or 2in tape?
