computer security programs, best type?

Fortunately, I had all my work and personal files backed up, but still a pain in the ass, and somehow I lost my $150 dollar copy of microsoft office, so that was lost.
Anyway, I was using Mcaffee, which did not notice the virus, which came in the form of appearing like a security program telling you that you have a virus, followed by destroying programs. It ended up erasing Mcaffee, which was kind of amusing viewed objectively.
Im now using Kaspersky, which does seem more active, but now im gunshy. Don't want to use Mcaffee again after that, and theres also Norton. Anybody have any other advice? Is Kaspersky a good security program?

When I had the same thing happen a year ago, I shut down IE & then restarted my puter in safe mode, ran Malwarebytes, then restored to a previous date.
The malware you got just hides software so that you cannot find it, so far as I can tell.
Most importantly, check any links before clicking on them. Especially on Facebook. If you hover your pointer over the link, look at what the address is. If it looks completely jumbled with numbers & letters, stay away.

I am of the impression that using more than one full time anti-virus program is a no-no. A massive waste of resources. Malwarebytes is great however.
Maybe also add peerblock or whatever it's new name is. Also free and blocks connections to a huge list of shady domains. Not really scanning for viruses just avoiding some bad neighborhoods.

Im pretty sure I clicked on something that looked exactly like something I actually would receive, like a tracking number on a fake UPS email, when I actually had a package I was tracking, so I was expecting that kind of email. They prey on that kind of mistake when they send a virus to enough people
Much easier to say "dont click" that then to act it out. I hadn't really ever had a major virus in my time owning computers, now going back 15 years or so, but I still back up my stuff constantly, and fortunately I lucked out having made a recent backup before this snafu. Only major loss was the microsoft program.
Ill check out AVG, so far very pleased with Kaspersky though
