I think so, I prefer getting sets though in case it's the wrong size. The length for example may matter as well.

No, your going to be looking for an M12 spline. aaa is right about the length. you need a longer shoulder on the socket to reach past some parts. heres a pic on one that works for me. its made by OEM which are availibe at most auto parts stores.

Are you sure it is a 12? I had a 10mm allen and it looked like 10 was the right size. 10 is also specified on this page.
http://www.samstagsales.com/mercedes.htm

Well I have ordered this $8 set. I hope one of them will fit/reach and hold up for me.

Happy Easter,

Head Bolt Issue:

Bought these about one month ago.

You can get a 4 piece set which will work for the head for $4.99 from O'Reilly's. All you need to do is grind off the sides about 1mm to fit. If you do not grind off the sides, you can jamb them into the sides where the supports hold the cam, but you run the risk of slight damage to the aluminum supports. I didnt care at the junk yard, but I will when it gets time to re-install.

Oh, now there are some allen bolts in the way too.
They need to come out to pull the head? I have a 10mm and a 14mm and it seems there are 4x -12mm and 1x 10mm bolts.

I tried to loosen the 10mm and it wanted to strip, is it possible there is an 11mm size?

If you are talking about the two allen bolts down in the chain hole, and the one or two over on the side of the chain hole, yup. Those have to come off too.
The allen bolts when I did my cylinder head were 5mm and 6mm. Are you talking about the triple-square size? If its the triple-square ( the special sockets above) they only have even number spacing as far as I know... 10, 12, 14, etc.

82 300SD aka The Flyin Pumpkin (Gone): 7.5mm super M-pump, T3 60 trim turbo, Coldish air intake, A/W intercooler, propane injection, SW Boost and EGT gauges, Monark 265 nozzles, ported/polished cylinder head.

84 Euro 300D 4 sp: White with black trunk and hood. Blue cloth interior. Manual everything. 300DT front swaybar. C320 17" wheels. Now with the Flyin Pumpkins engine!

I'll get pictures. But they are like right in the middle of the cylinders. 4 are one size and 1 is smaller near the front. Like 10-12mm not triple hex thay are just allens. I have ordered a set of allen sockets.

These are the hex bolts I'm talking about. I got those 2 little guys by the camgear. And I tried to bump the head with a sledge to loosen it but it seems these hex bolts are still holding it.
Sucks because I broke another craftsman socket wrench trying to loosen them. Will need to get a driver size adapter for my breakerbar. Worst of all that little one seems to be bigger than 10mm and I can't think of a way to get a grip on it.

we'll see how it goes I just got the 1/2 -- 3/8 adapter. There where 2 in the 'timing chain pocket' like 6 or 8mm. I'm afraid that the 12mm socket will break and that the 10mm bolt will strip. Then what will I do?

Really? They coolant plugs on the side but, on the top too? Why won't my head come loose? I hit it on both sides pretty well with a 12lb sledge and don't see it budging.
Maybe I am really doing this wrong.
Anybody? Am I going to need a jack or something to get it loose or should I just be able to pick it off? How much does it weigh? like +/- 100lb ?

I got a replacement head from the junkyard, and I had to stand and straddle the engine bay. It weights AAALLLOTTTT. I would say it weighes at least 80+ pounds. And yes, there was 2 (I think) bolts down inside where the chain is, and one off to the side near the power steering pump. If you do not care about the cosmetics of the car, you can just straddle the engine and lift it off, being careful not to drag it too much as the pre-combustion "domes" protrude from the bottom of the head about 1/2" -- I would be concernd about breaking one of those.
However, on a re-install, I plan on just pulling the engine and trans and spending about 2 weeks on it. A number of members suggested taking my time, et cet., and I think they are right. Hope this helps.

I was in the engine bay straddling the motor, I guess that's like rounding thirdbase and she's dead which makes it even grosser.
Anyhow, the head will not budge and I had thought it must be those hex bolts I am talking about. Maybe the shortblock and head are just really stuck after 29years of marriage.

Should I work at loosening those hex bolts? Or try and break the 2 pieces apart?

When I did my head, the same thing happened. It took several minutes of wacking with a rubber coated dead blow hammer to get that sucker loose. 29 years of torqued together is a LOT of time. I wouldn't even mess with those coolant plug bolts. Just work on getting the two parts divorced! Smile Dont forget about the 3 little allens like Greazzer had said.

There is usually a strap at the back right near the lifting point that needs to come off.

you also need to break the chain or at least remove the pins from the guide rail.
ps.. cherry picker'd pull dat varmint rhat off.
