If you had to pick one mercedes engine to put all your time, money and love into which would you pick? The engine that you would keep forever, move from chassis to chassis etc.

Om606 with a mechanical pump would be my choice. Just need to find one for a decent price.

That's a tough call.

I would choose the OM606A.

But a close second would be OM642.920 if money is no object.

But on the cheap... OM617.95x.

Gota love Mercedes Diesels!

besides being an interesting thread, i'm going to be taking some auto shop classes at my school in the next semester or two. they recommend you have an engine to rebuild - the sequence of the classes is a complete rebuild - everything - and they have pretty great equipment. i'm really partial to the 617 just because it's what i know, but i'm thinking maybe if i get this once-in-a-long-time chance to rebuild an engine properly for the cost of parts, it might make sense to consider my options.

whats teemu petolta running? 606? when are the fin bastards going to share their diesel secrets for big power?

edit: DAMN. 3.0 24V TD I6 177 PS (130 kW; 175 hp) 330 N·m (243 lb·ft) OM606A E300 Turbodiesel

I like the V12, but what the hell you would put it in? A hotrod toy hauler? Rat rod Kenworth? LOL

82 300SD aka The Flyin Pumpkin (Gone): 7.5mm super M-pump, T3 60 trim turbo, Coldish air intake, A/W intercooler, propane injection, SW Boost and EGT gauges, Monark 265 nozzles, ported/polished cylinder head.

84 Euro 300D 4 sp: White with black trunk and hood. Blue cloth interior. Manual everything. 300DT front swaybar. C320 17" wheels. Now with the Flyin Pumpkins engine!

Stock turbo engine with big turbo, big ic, Mynä pump etc gets you quite far.

Either a om606 with mechanical pump, or a om605. Its where all the BIG power is at.

But there is just somthing SO charming about the 617...

OM606.962, OM648.961 or just for grunt a OM629.9xx engine tho for the latter two it needs custom ECU's.

I wouldn't mind getting an STD..Tongue
