tadaaaa! took the car for a drive today and got it registered.

issues that popped up during driving today:
-brakes feel clunky, rotors seem to be mildly warped
-need to get vac lines hooked up properly so key will shut it off
-oil leak appears to be coming from the vacuum pump housing (minor)
-need to put the fuel door back on

stuff that i still need to do as well:
-center support replacement (rubber)
-buff the rest of the car out
-paint the remaining 2 wheels + get 4 new tires
-hook up oil pressure sender, speedo cable, shutoff valve
-power steering belt + fluid install

and now i leave you with a video:

in other news, it seems to be running hot. temp gauge reading 90*C - i'm thinking maybe it just needs a new thermostat - would a thermostat failure possibly cause the thermostat to switch at a higher temp and thus the car runs hot but not super hot?

Another item to deal with - transmission ground strap. The stock one is not insulated, which was an issue today. It touched the ss clutch flex line I have now and when I tried to start the engine I got a puff of smoke! It heated the clutch line up and started to make the brake fluid (from when I was bleeding it) smoke! Stuck a rag in the way and it was back to normal. Going to use an insulated one instead now.

A ground strap should not need to be insulated. Chech your main engine ground. Also, use a AOM to see if you find positive on the braided line. You have a weird issue there.

just put in an order for a new center support bearing / rubber, exhaust hangars, thermostat, transmission rubber mount (crossmember), and vacuum pump gasket. i am 99% sure that the oil leak i have right now is around the vacuum pump - i think i messed up when installing the gasket last time.

heater works! tested it out and it blows nice and hot. still need to figure out the vacuum lines in the engine compartment, and splice up the starter solenoid wire.

hopefully the stuff arrives before the 16th so i can be less sketched about making the drive to SD!

took it out for a nice afternoon drive today, and dropped by my detailer friend's house to do a little more work on the paint. temps are not too bad, looks like maybe 85 degrees while cruising. hopefully that gets better after a new thermostat, flush, and fill with zerex (running water right now).

240's never came with them, but they would be better than hub caps. I used to hate the bundt wheels. Especially chrome ones! I have a set if interested, they have been refinished, tires are ok. Definitely runable. I like the alum. 240's. Trade?

without a long detailed explanation, the newer car was a gift from grandparents after i was having reliability problems with the last car (wagon) and failed a couple classes. the car is mine and titled to me, but it would be reeaalllly ungrateful to turn around and sell the car for cash.

hey does anybody know if the newer style om617 vacuum pumps (with the main vacuum hose & intake hose going to the airbox) will fit my 616 (only has the single hookup)
still putting off selling the benz, hopefully the job hunt pans out. dropping off an application at the kragen by my house, that would be a useful employee discount to have!

testing out aircraft stripper on one of my bundts (i fucking hate sanding shit) and it looks to be working well. if this one works out, will do my other one, and get two more from the junkyard to do.

sale seems to have been averted for the time being!

my friend is working on leasing a shop about 30 mins from my house, and may even be putting a lift in! will hopefully be able to bring the 240 up there and continue work on it Big Grin going to be a pretty cool little space - cars that will be parked in there as soon as its leased: '73 bmw 2002 (he crashed it into a tree, now we're fixing/restoring it), his '84 toyota landcruiser (real clean!), and my '81 mb 240D.

aaaaand we're back. working on getting it back on the road after years of sitting.

in the last couple days:
-new center support bearing installed, driveshaft put back into car (it'd been on the garage floor for a while)
-set of new tires installed, wheels back on the car
-found the new battery i bought and never installed (1+yr ago), gonna see if it takes a charge
-new hardware holding the air filter housing in place so it doesnt rattle like crazy

things that i have to sort out:
-the oil pressure gauge send line is currently hanging free with a screw plugging it, idk what i was planning but i gotta figure out how to hook that back up
-gotta crawl under and reinstall the speedo cable, no biggie
-last time i drove it, the vac shutoff wasnt working, and the vac locks were acting weird. gonna have to go through the whole vac system :-\
-power steering has a leak somewhere i guess, it's empty.
-i vaguely recall i needed to troubleshoot the glow plug system, dunno whats up with that, we'll see when i get the battery going
-need to hook something up between the intake and the valve cover vent, idk if i can find some bits and pieces to put something together or if i'm going to have to find the oem parts for that....

other random parts i need to buy / replace:
-hood star
-spare tire deck
-antenna mast

thats all for now, i'll try and remember to keep this thread updated Tongue

i love these cars sometimes. always seems it takes >5 days to diagnose/troubleshoot an issue, and <5 minutes to fix it.

while scratching my head about the glow plug system, i discovered that the strip fuse on the relay is not there. dunno how i never checked that, since it has to have been that way as long as i've had this thing in my possession. Tongue

the crappy econo power battery that i bought randomly like a year ago is dead, and the battery tender is refusing to even try charging it, so it looks like tomorrow is battery and fuse shopping. hopefully the thing glows and cranks properly with that sorted out. and i noticed in my old posts on this thread that the currently installed glow plugs are the really bad kind, so i'll be hunting down proper ones asap.

life, work, etc. running a vape shop (e-cigs) with a buddy these days. car's just been sitting this whole time and i keep thinking i'll sell it but then never get around to buttoning it up for sale. now that i'm working on it, i'm wanting to keep it Tongue

put in a duralast platinum battery that is a big bigger than a group 49 but fits fine, installed 80 amp strip fuse and BOOM engine started! that was short lived though and it died after a bit of idling, i think there's air in there, gonna try loosening the injector lines to bleed anything out of there, and the usual system bleed spot. also picked up a new hood ornament when i grabbed the strip fuses.

noticed some fuel leaking from the return line on the #1 cylinder (closest to firewall) so i'll have to figure out what that's about. noticed that when i replaced the lines previously, i put a plugged line on the 2nd fitting of the #1 cylinder's injector, dunno if that's the right way so maybe that will get changed too.

yep it was air, runs perfectly now.hurray!

new beru coolant temp sensor installed.

looks like i replaced the oil pressure gauge line previously, there's a proper one coming through the firewall. going to hook that up and see if it works.

looking more carefully at the power steering system (which has always had a leak) it looks like the low pressure line is leaking where the hose slips on and is clamped to the fitting on the steering box side. going to try replacing that (with proper hydraulic hose, not heater hose) and see if the leak goes away. i know that when the system has fluid, it works perfectly fine, so if that leak is the only issue that'll be cool.

going to order new glow plugs since autozone didn't have them.

speedo cable all hooked up now.

pulled the power steering low pressure return line, the lower end (steering box side) is all cracked and junky, looks like that is the source of the leak. further supporting that theory is the fact that the pump is empty, but the steering box fitting had plenty of clean fluid sitting in it when i pulled the hose, suggesting the leak isnt in the box or rack. gotta hunt down a proper replacement and see if that fixes the issue.

He shipped it down to Haiti for his family to use I think 6 or 7 years ago. Thing was in the center of Port-au-Prince during the earthquake and survived it apparently. The guy lost a lot of family unfortunately, but his rusty old car is still going.

had a busy day at work, so no parts got picked up, but i'm eyeing out some stuff in the meantime.

on the vacuum lines, my ignition supply / shutoff valve lines are correct, my door lock and vac res lines are correct, but i found two danglers. one is black with a yellow strip, i believe that's a cruise control (which i removed) supply line as it doesnt go into the firewall and isnt hooked to anything. the other is coming from the port below the fusebox and is much thicker but still the same plastic material, and has a gray plastic nut at the end. what is that?

getting busy at work again, but this morning i got a chance to fiddle with the vac system. it's all hooked up right now and the central locking is working proper. shutoff from the ignition isnt working, but a syringe pulling on the IP shutoff works fine. no vacuum on the line when the key is off, so i am guessing it's a bad valve on the ignition side of things. dunno how much of a bear it's going to be to replace that :-\ but at least the vac system and the engine shutoff are straight!

Its not to bad the speedometer cluster has to be out to work on it. There are two hoses hook one up to the switch you can blow through when the ignition is off and cant when the switch is in the on position.

removal at this point is easy turn the key on one or 2 two positions put A PAPERCLIP IN THE LITTLE HOLE ON THE FRONT OF THE SWITCH turn the key until the paper clip pops in then the outer black shell will unscrew and the ignition tumbler, retaining ring, key, paperclip come off in your hand. set it aside do not remove the paper clip. then under the dash there is a clamp on the column remove it i think it 10mm. then there is a little button you have to press in and the whole unit slides out of the steering column. it will not fit out from behind the dash if the key tumbler is still in it.

as I remember the vacuum shut off part is rebuild able or replaceable if its not workingBig Grin as for vacuum lines one line goes from the switch to vacuum and the other goes to the shutoff on the injection pump. Its that simple vacuum through the switch when off no vacuum when on

You can remove and check the valve. there is a plastic cam inside the switch it rides on that can also wear out. also a hole in the hose or a disconnected line are very common

well, disaster has struck - my GTI had a major engine-destroying failure and now needs a new long block (~$5k). so now the 240D gets priority! sucks, but at least i have a backup.

replaced the power steering low pressure return line (steering box-->pump). afaik original part is 12mm ID, closest i could find right now was 12.5mm so i installed that and we'll see if it leaks. refilled the system and put a new belt on, appears to be working so far.

did an oil change for good measure since the thing has been sitting and it was cheap enough to just do. new filter + delo 15w40.

it now runs and drives around the block and seems fine other than the known existing issues. taking it to my mechanic on tuesday to have him poke around and see if i missed any major stuff before i start daily driving this car 1hr north for work.
