I am looking to drop a 617 in a cherokee and have been looking for a way to install a 5 speed I have found a 85 190d with a 2.2 and a 5 speed as well as a engine and trans from a 72 220d he says it is a 5 speed but I am unshure if they made 5 speeds then I have only seen 4 speeds. It has a removable bell if any one here can help that would be great
Oh ya forgot do all 5 speeds bolt up? is a bell from a gasser the same bolt pattern?

The 190D is not compatible. The starter hump is on the wrong side and it would take more than potions to make it work. Wink

There was no 5-speed manual in 1972 so its another case of the seller counting reverse as a speed.

The only 5-speeds that will work with an OM617 are used behind Euro OM616, Euro OM617 and Euro M110 (280E/CE/TE). There is no 5-speed sold in the USA that will bolt-on, all came installed in gray-market import cars.
All found in the 190D, 190E, 230 and 250 g@ssers will not work.

Iron early style:

Aluminum later style:
