I'm speechless... I didn't watch the superbowl but someone posted this to the Volvo D24 list. It's pretty funny, since I had a 245 diesel with shot rings that really smoked that bad many years ago...

I saw that. If the best you can do is compare yourself to 30 yr old diesels that clearly have problems (what are they running used oil?) then you have a long way to go. Welcome back to the market either way.

The American public is afraid of diesels still because they have a reputation for being slow, noisy, smoky, and hard to start they've never been able to shake despite the fact that only terribly tuned/maintained ~30 year old N/A diesels really live up to this reputation.

+1 On the D24 list someone pointed out that the Volvo wagon is not even a diesel. It's clearly a US-spec 86-88 model (from the headlights and color code) whereas the last year they sold the diesel 245 in the USA was 1984.
It's a gas wagon with CGI diesel soot... but they *could* have made a real diesel 240 smoke that much just by turning the fuel screw all the way in. It's way easier to turn the fuel up on those VE pumps than our inline cam type ones.
