I love that, it's very cool. I'm still trying to find a good way to add a gauge to mine without hacking it up too bad.

My Volvo diesel is lucky enough to have a 5 minute screw in calibrated gauge option, thanks to Dave Barton:

It might be possible to use these gauge parts (Stock Volvo 740 Turbo) and make a whole new tachometer faceplate for the Mercedes Diesel that integrates calibrated numbers for the volvo gauge in the MB cluster.

The Volvo gauge is really abundant in junkyards and is identical mechanically to the one used in this writeup, but already comes with no housing.

Why not just use the gasser tach with the economy gauge? I think thats a much better looking solution....

I am having a devil of a time figuring out where to put a 16x2/20x4 LCD in the 87. The best place I can think of right now is in the visor. I could get a 16x1 display and put it in the temp display area but that severely limits how much info I can put without constantly scrolling.

You could mount it in a small plastic project enclosure and velcro it under or over the dash. That way you can also experiment with the placement without cutting/drilling plastic.

That's how I mounted my TM-2 "engine watchdog" overheat alarm. I'm also looking into adding an LCD for Arduino output, *if* Olefejer posts an affordable source for a diesel fuel flowmeter. I want instantaneous MPG calculations with data logging so I can experiment with how different variables (speed, injection timing, gearing, boost, fuel, injector nozzles, etc.) affect fuel economy.

I've got a small 2x16 lcd, it's ~ 11 point font, overall size of 2.5cmX4cm or so. I can get the part number off it if you want.

You can also make your own gauge with a micro servo and a gauge needle, and get exactly what you want.

edit:
Electronics Goldmine still sells the displays, here's the link: http://www.goldmine-elec-products.com/pr...ber=G16081

Very very small, might end up being too small for easy readability in a car now that I think about it...
