Say you were going to build the ideal VNT controller for our cars, what inputs would it receive and how would they make the turbo respond?

Computer control with a servo actuator. RPM, throttle position and boost would be the minimum inputs needed to run it, road speed and exhaust pressure could help with economy.

RPM and TP determine the engine load which determines the desired pressure and boost input gives feedback to the ECM. Road speed could be used to fine tune the boost needed during cruise situations.

Here is how Holset controls their VGT.

I assume that Holset and the other VNT turbo manufactures' Turbo ECU is integrated into the vehicles main ECU, correct?

Correct. I don't know of any vehicle that uses an ECM just for the turbo.

Yes to easy.

I believe that a voice coil would be the best way to do it. Fast and completely linear.

I had a brilliant idea today on the way home. Replacing the ALDA with a stepper motor (or even an ideal use for the CCU). This would allow you to control the amount of fuel (and rack travel?) based on all of the other factors. Beside fuel economy it would act as a failsafe incase of over boost, stuck vanes or if you feel like it (cruising economy).

The problem with that, and the electronic VNT is that you need to hire an electrical engineer. :geek:

The problem with that is your right foot controls maximum fuel. The ALDA has no affect at all on cruising economy.
