Hi,

603 turbo, mechanical IP, stock engine.

first the good news:
I sent a pump together with a set of Floyd elements and delivery valves to Finland. The pump was 3 days in the shop as the guy wanted to 'play' with the Floyd elements.
Yesterday I installed the pump and it ran perfectly form the first start without touching any adjustment, no return to idle issue, nothing, it just ran.
The short impression on the test drive was fast response, no idle smoke, perfect engine sound (timing, dynamically with clamp and strobe 24deg BTDC). This pump is noticeably stronger compared to the 7mm pump before.
Behaviour like stock, smooth power development (both pumps without turbo lag) but the Floyd pump gives the feeling of having lost the half of the weight of the car.
During hard acceleration I had acceptable smoke all the way up to approx. 150 Km/h (up to 5000/min), no black puff This is for sure adjustable as I did not touch anything before. The whole drive was about 15 min, 5-6 km.

Bad news:
Right after this acceleration the engine nailed terribly and smoked dark.
Back in my garage I checked the timing again because the nailing was combustion origin nothing mechanical (for my ears) so I checked the timing again. 36 degBTDC, which is the reason for nailing and smoke.
The IP did not move, no leaks, no grey/white smoke, no water/temperature/oil pressure issues, just about 12 deg advanced.
Can the timing device stuck in max. advanced position?
I'll check everything in the next couple of days..

12 degrees is beyond what the timer can adjust, but its also too little for a jumped chain tooth. The only other thing I can think of is the screw for individual element adjustment came loose.

...but only on cyl. #1? If so the engine would shake but it does not, just nailing hard.
I'll check this by putting the clamp on the next cyl. to fire after #1 and check the deg in relation to TDC.

Thanks,

Tom

Yes, each element has its own clamp on the rack.

But that wouldn't change the position of the timing mark on pump shaft.

Right, but the timing of the #1 element would.

Hi,

the reason for advanced jump of the pump is a defective toothed bushing in the timing device. Already the first time removing the pump I had issues to get it out. Installing was also critical being stupid I just pulled it into the timing device using the screw...
Funny thing is that this happened while deceleration otherwise the pump would have gone late.
Now I will install another timing device and continue the testing.

The pump was done by member pp d and it was the first pump which was really plug and run.
