Hello to all members. I am new to this forum and I want to create my 1983 car profile. It is a 1983 240D, which I had completely rebuilt the engine. I been driving the car for exactly one year. TurboDiesel has given me some good info on another forum that is greatly appreciated.

The VIN # is:WDBAB23A0DB361056. I was concerned about the vibration that the engine has. That an engine shock is to stop the engine from shaking when one shuts it down. I can turn up the idle a bit and that seems to smooth things out a bit.

I know the little black knob left of the steering column adjusts the idle but mine is not working. So this is on the to do list. My question is which rod should I adjust to increase the idle? There are so many linkage rods that I just do not know which one is best to adjust.

Also, this car has two linkage rods by the manual stop (driver side) that have a square hole that a plastic insert goes in that connect, I am sure one of these is for the manual idle control, the other is for what? I am not sure what this is for. I have one black covered cable that is attached, not correctly, just wrapped around the square hole. Is this maybe for the transmission kick down? I hope I explained this well enough. It is probably hard to visualize with out a picture.

I am off to see about the manual idle speed adjustment because I really want this to work.

Thanks for any help.

The engine/transmission mounts and engine shocks and their mounts are about $300 in parts and a little work. If it's shaking that bad you're going to break something more expensive than motor mounts. And take some pictures of your car if you would. We want to see them anyway.

Hey thanks for the reply. I think most of the trouble is in my head. Since I never drove a diesel before, except some trucks, I just thought that they would run smooth. If I adjust my idle a tad I can get her to smooth out a bit. The rest I will get use to. She seems to be getting a bit smoother on her own. Maybe the engine is breaking in.

I only put about 6000 miles on her so far. I am just not use to these diesels but would not trade her in for a new Cadillac. I am hooked.

I will send some pictures and thanks again.

when idling my hood vibrates visibly, and in gear at a stop light i can feel the vibration move my head side to side. I think that's fairly normal.

Thanks for the reply to my posts. I am glad to know about the 240 running rough. It is not a problem getting use to. I had the car on the road for one year now and the more I drive it the more I like it.

On another note, I really like the headlights on your car. I just bought 2 new tires for the front, stock 14" on the aluminum alloy wheels. I am going to a Mercedes junk yard and am thinking about getting some larger rims. The cars seem to look pretty slick with larger wheels. Your car is looking great.

How does she handle with the larger wheels and tires?

Just one of the many things I would like to do to my Benz.

Again, I am feeling quite a bit better knowing that these cars just vibrate some. The nature of the beast.

Thanks

1983 240D with about 335000 on it before I rebuilt the engine. Now she has about 6000 on it.
The engine did not need to be rebuilt, It is a long story and things just happened that way.

4 cylinder engines are naturally unbalanced. The fact its a diesel and doesn't use balance shafts makes it worse.

How about the basics? Had the injectors poptested?

Got any pics of the rebuild?

Auto or manual. 240D manual with sunroof and a 5 speed is just about the perfect car IMO.

My car rides like a Rolls Royce with the bigger wheels and tires and the bilstein HD shocks help it's as smooth as glass! I got the euro headlights brand new off ebay for $180 for both including the clear corner lights!
