So due to the recent death of my '84 300D, I'm shopping around for another w123.

Cars I've looked at so far:

83 300D
Asking price $2650
Paint: silver, absolutely worn to chalkiness
Body: straight, no dents
Miles: ~270k
Interior: wood panels cracked, many switches need replacing, upholstery cracked
A/c: not cold, reasons unknown
Etc: strange faint rumble at low speed reasons unknown

85 300D
Asking price: 3200
Paint: gold, original, perfect except wear on roof
Body: straight, no dents
Miles:260k one owner (old lady)
Interior: upholstery cracked, seat springs totally shot
A/c: not cold, reasons unknown
Etc: transmission sorta hesitates to change gears (p->drive, p->rev, etc), engine needs throttle on cold start or it stumbles

80 300TD (non turbo)
Asking price: $2490
Paint: burgandy, repainted. Some rust bubbling on front passenger door at trim
Body: straight, no dents
Miles: 182k
Interior: like new, totally immaculate
A/c: not cold, reason unknown, control not working totally right either
Etc: damn are nonturbos this slow? Holy jesus! Also, hood pad missing, and hood hing springs not attached (hinges damaged? Unsure)

I realllly want a TD but this one is soooo sloooww. Both sedans have their issues as well. Do I pick one, or keep looking? What do you guys think?

Thats an $800 car, $1000 at best. That guy is on crack if he thinks its worth $2650 with those defects.

$3200 is another dream. $1500, maybe $1800 at best.

Being a wagon automatically boosts the value a little, but with the defects $2500 is high. $1600, maybe $1800.
Non-turbo engines shouldn't be slow. My engines accelerate reasonably with the VNT's vanes turned off (no boost).

Keep looking, especially out of state. Arizona has great condition cars without the California WVO-freakshow markup.

i agree with all you guys' points, and i guess i should have added some more info to my OP-

i do know that these are not proper prices - the market is inflated as hell. the problem is i work full time AND am in school full time (even for summer semester). i have money, and have almost zero time. if that were not the case, i would definitely be taking a different path. as it stands, i have a $3000 budget, and need to rectify the car situation A.S.A.P. so I'm willing to tolerate somewhat inflated prices.

i've been combing LA/SD/OC/IE/SB for a while now, and the 3 i listed were the only worthwhile ones i've found, other than a couple wagons asking $6000 which are way out of my range.

took a look at a cleaner (albeit higher mileage) 300TD and the guy would absolutely not budge off of $4500. ridiculous.

if nothing else turns up, i'm going to bring the red 300TD over to my mechanic to get his blessing.

the w123 market SUCKS right now.
