Anyone got any views on the C Class 722.5 Trans for Tuning applications, maybe behind a 'megged-up' 606 Turbo-Diesel??
--Been looking at a Manual for it, and it Looks to be the sorta last of the Vac controlled trans, before the electronics took over....

They used it in some of the larger engined vehicles, so may have some potential

A friend of mine runs it in his stock 603.
The 5th is electronically controlled.
He has made a controller for it with speed and load as input to shift the 5th.
The trans repair shops over here consider this type the worst that MB ever built.
But the drive in combination with the 2.6x rear end is fantastic.

So, 1-4 are mechanical like before and 5th isn't much different in operation from an external OD unit?

Yes. I don't know the ratios but it's fantastic to drive.
Simply made you can just el. switch the 5th.
There is an electro hydraulic valve that when activated does not shift the 5th and the tranny goes from 3 to 5 directly. Common defect and people fear the nearly 1000 EUR for repair. The valve is about 400 EUR in MB.
The cables are in the oil system together with heat the isolation breaks and the lose parts then either block bores and/or breaks plastic gear wheels and as a result those bigger parts do the rest...
These are 95% of the defects and there are many of them.
Since months I am collecting such trannies to make one or two good ones.

Ah finally some knowledge on these boxes! I have this box as fitted into my W124 300-24CE and I recently replaced the box due to this 3rd to 5th shift problem that started plaguing my car ever since I bought it in 2002 gradually getting worse and mor noticable until the gearbox failed by way on constant slippage. I got another gearbox out of a W210 300 Diesel (not sure if it was a Turbo D??) I had to change the end casing to get the box to mount up.

My qeustion here is to Tomnik.

you say an electro hydraulic valve controls 5th and if faulty can cause the gearbox to change from 3rd to 5th missing fourth altogether? If this is the case can you tell me where the valve is located I am presuming the gearbox? This worries me cause although the box I got from the W210 diesel seems great it is still missing 4th gear occasionally albeit not as bad as the previous box did.

Any ideas what may cause this ??

I just stumbled across this pdf that explains the function of the electronic 5th gear controller. it seems pretty straight forward.
