Hello all,
I'm going to pull the trigger soon on a 300d. I'm not a total stranger to them though. In Alaska I had a 220D that was the only 4 door I have ever had that thought it was a F1 car, a hoot to drive. Also have a good friend that has had them for years. He kinda got that "thought" started. He wants to put 300 engine and tras into his old Ford F100.

I'm sure it would work for him. No powerhouse, but for around town....very cool. We're not gonna put too much thought into it because the weights are close. A rear end ratio change my be in order though, we'll see.

So, I was thinking.... I want a Mercedes powered truck to...... BUT, has to be a daily driver.

Some questions;
1) Has anyone ever put a 300 powerplant in to a full size truck before?

2) Has there ever been a trans adapter or bellhousing adapter developed for these engines?

3) Power/torque I think will be a limiting factor here. (I'll need more) What would be the average HP a guy could get RELIABLY out of one of these things?

I'll stop here, thousands of questions though!
Thanks for the input.

People are working on getting power from the 617. Tomnik and others on this forum have done a lot of work designing and installing larger injector pump elements in MW pumps. Myna Diesel and PP Diesel in Finland have done extensive work on M pumps, including pumping elements as well as governor modifications.

A guy who goes by Cell on this board has put an OM617 in a Chevy C10. http://jason.pepas.com/wiki/index.php?ti...EngineSwap.

Nobody seems to have a "top power" number that the 617 can do reliably. The stock pump output can be increased a little bit, but not much. A lot of people have done things with turbos, intercoolers, etc.

Someone put a 617 in a 4Runner. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEgl5P-Ooew. http://s434.photobucket.com/albums/qq70/...17%20swap/.

Why not go for lighter, more economical and already more powerful OM603 or OM606?

Thanks for all the input. Kmaser, the trans adapter is a huge help. It opens up a lot of opportunity to convert anything. I have it bookmarked.

As for the OM606 and OM603, I dont know anything about these guys, never been around them. I'm sure they are great engines. I was leaning toward the ol' 617 because they are so plentiful and easy to work on. Cheap too. But lighter and more power is better as long as reliability is there. I'll do some more research on the OM606 and 603.

Are the bell housings the same as the 617's?

Electronics required?

hummm......

Check out http://www.4btswaps.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7413

I haven't updated it in a while though.

There is now a dedicated sub forum for om617 swaps over at 4btswaps.com.

I'm enjoying my swap, but it needs more power. I mainly went the om617 because it was cheap, readily available, and they are known to be very reliable engines.

I very, very seriously considered going with a cummins 4bt. But I got tired of waiting and planning and went with the om617 because it was something I could get started on right away.
