I wanted to share the knowledge from a long hard lesson we learned on our 617.
We did a rebuild of our engine over the winter and replaced the rear main seal. We eventually replaced it three more times after repeated failures.
A local machine shop mentioned that they have had problem with the newer rope seals because they no longer make them out of asbestos.
Fortunately, the original Mercedes part is asbestos. And we were surprised to find out when it arrived that it the dimensions are different from the other seals we tried. Approximately .02" thicker in height and width of the cross section.
So if you are having problems with your rear main seal. Try the original Mercedes part.

Did you sniff the asbestos seal before putting it in?

This is a great example of why banning materials from all applications isn't the best solution. Pipe insulation where it might flake off near a ventilation system? Definitely ban it.

In a car where it will be bathed in oil and contained? Don't ban it cmon' guys
