W123 Engine Swap Questions
I recently found a 1980 200D for sale with a manual transmission. My thinking is to swap the five cylinder turbo from my 300TD for the four cylinder from the 200D. The 200D is a W123 chassis so will the motors bolt to the other car with relative ease? I know that Forced has a 3.0 in his 240D so I'm hoping the same logic will apply to a 200D. I know that an engine swap is no small feat, but will it (for the most part) be a direct swap?
Are you in Europe? If you're in the USA and the W123 200D is functional, it would be much more valuable and rare as-is.
The OM615 is dimensionally the same as a 616 so the swap process would be the same, except a 200D should have a "Gorilla Knob" on the dash (Partially seen in the lower left of the first picture) to control the glowplugs and starter.
I'm in Flint Michigan. The current owner says that it is more of a "project car", so I assume it would take some very significant funds to restore it to "rare classic car status." The guy is asking $600. I was hoping to swap the 617 turbo motor from my parts 300TD and utilize the manual transmission on the 200D. I would put the 615 in the TD so I would be able to move it under its own power, just VERY slowly.
Will the turbo 617 fit into the 200D? The transmissions will fit if I switch the flywheels, right? I seem to remember to hear something about swapping the front springs as well.

It will fit. Its pretty much the same as a 240D swap except for having to deal with the gorilla knob.
The flywheel will be a little light but it will work fine and you'll have to cut the driveshaft 4" shorter as you would with a 240d.
Search the various forums for swap guides. It has been done many times before and is detailed quite well.
The driveshaft and shifter linkages must be shortened by 4". The crossmember can be modified to work or one from an automatic 240D can have the proper holes drilled into it.
