Exhaust question
My 82 TD is going in to a local exhaust shop to get the rear section replaced, there is a hole at the rear hanger and I'm getting some fumes in the car. I want them to bend up a (3"?) pipe to go from the slip connection ahead of rear axle straight out the rear past bumper, the front section is in very good condition (oil leaks probably helped that) so I'm leaving that in place.
Will it be much louder with rear muffler delete? Some sound is OK, but my wife will be using this car so I don't want it too loud.

It will have a deeper rumble, but it won't be nearly as loud as a complete straight pipe with the resonator still in place.

Sounds great, not too loud but wife still asked why its coming back from the exhaust shop louder then when it went in. (I told her it needed a special muffler which was too expensive, so we went with out it to save some money) She also asked me why I lowered it, said "If anything, should'nt we raise it a bit?!?!"
Sounds/looks really good with the fr muffler and straight pipe out the back, not too loud, but it is audible on the high way. I likke the sound of some tailpipe, not sure how differnt it would sound with a muffler at the r only. They did a beautiful job as usual, next the Samurai will go in (I tore the entire exhaust out from the mani back wheelin).
The oil leaks are much better too, now its time to put some miles on it for the rest of the summer. Engine/manual trans swap plans on hold for a while since I just got started on a turbo engine swap in the Audi.

My 83' SD is way too quiet! I removed the muffler hoping for some more tone and was still just as quiet. It has a brand new complete system on it but i want it gone. Is it bad for these cars to remove the midpipe muffler and make it a straight pipe? I have heard that it is needed for backpressure but is there any other way i can get the pressure and get the sound of a cummins??? its quiter than my brothers 4 cyl gasser.
Backpressure is bad for diesels. Those twin "kidneys" do most of the muffling.
so taking the midpipe off the car wouldnt hurt it? and also i have read that when they test diesels for emissions they only test the exhaust smoke density. do they test sound?
If you want that Cummins sound you will have to add a cylinder, the backpressure will slow the spool of the turbo and not help boost. As of right now in Califorina they don't care about old Merc. diesels so anything goes, give them time or money and we will be the next target.
thanks i had already taken off the mid pipe and took it out for a drive and it sounds awesome enough for me! as for california, I couldnt live more east. ct is crackin down on emission though.

However, best option is custom downpipe and no muffler.

turbo's keep cars quiet our wagon have a 3" turbo back with one muffler... shes a little drony around 70 but other then that it sounds great... even my mom likes it!
