84 Mercedes 300d, turbo+4 speed
Hi, my name is Dave and I just purchased an 84 300d that I'd like to convert to run on wvo. I had bought an 85 euro 300d that ad the Om617(NA) paired up to a 4 speed manual. Unfortunately I totaled that car about a month ago, those crumple zones definitely did their job lol. I rear-ended a car and then was rear-ended immediately after. It's a shame since the car was in pristine condition, no rust, nice white paint, Euro headlights, but what's done is done.
Fortunately my buddy was able to find an 84 300d, this one, is an American 300d, w/ the OM617a(turbo) motor, this car is in great shape, no rust, just faded paint a crack in the windshield, a "hot air" intake that needs to get replaced with the stocker, and some vacuum leaks to seal up (car won't shut off w/o stalling out). I had the 4 spd swapped into the 84, and this car is just a completely different animal , I can now pull out onto the road with confidence, and I don't need to downshift when I'm passing.
I'm impressed with some of the w123's I've seen here, and would just like to pick everyone's brain as I fix her up. My goals are to increase mileage and convert this car to run on wvo with a 2 tank setup, and if I get some extra ponies along the way that'd be nice too, but you won't see me getting a vnt turbo anytime soon.
I've considered biodiesel but opted for veggie since I live in an apartment and don't have a place to put a processor, it's going to be bad enough, doing the filtering and dewatering on my porch, I don't need to throw lye and methanol into the mix.
So what I'm working on right now is parting out the Euro Benz, I have nice blue MB-Tex interior, I have the complete OM617, ip, brakes, axle, my doors are good, lots of stuff that I plan to start posting on here. One question, does my turbo Benz (84 om617a auto) have a different axle ratio than my na Benz (85 om617 4sp)?
Its just a flesh wound! But seriously that does suck though, Euro cars are awesome
Anyway about your list of stuff to do, valve adjustment and injection pump timing will surely help with mileage and power. When I adjusted the IP timing in my car I got like 8 more mpg's, unfortunately its out of adjustment again and I've been too lazy/busy to re-do it properly.
Also I have a two tank WVO setup if you have any questions
Anyway, good luck!!
I would take the 4spd out of the totaled car and slap it on the turbo motor. Should be real fun to drive. Also it looks like you can salvage the front euro bumper.

NA would be 3.46, the turbo is 3.06.

The only down side to using the stock tank for veg is that its not as easy to remove and clean if/when necessary. I haven't looked in my tank to see if its getting dirty or not, but I know my friend bought a late 70's diesel rabbit that had been converted and one of the first things he did was take the auxiliary tank out and pressure/steam clean it because it was so nasty, but the people he bought it from were stoners that didn't know what they were doing and put dirty oil in it. They also didn't install a return line for the veg tank so it all ended up in the stock tank after about 20 minutes of driving lol
Other than that, I would say that method looks good, pretty much the same thing I did except I have a hose-in-hose to heat my oil instead of a heat exchanger like that one
Damn shame. The Euro model looked amazing! But the new one looks good. Not sure I'd go with the veggie set up though. But that's just me. I've seen people process biodiesel pretty easily. They just get 5 gallon jugs of filtered oil, mix in the methanol and lye, let the jug sit for a couple days, pour off the good stuff, and it's basically done. I suppose the veggie setup is more instant but what freaks me out is what kind of crap it can do to your engine. Just my opinion.
the 84 should have a 3.06 rear and the 85 should have a 2.88 rear.
I would not use veggie in the stock tank for too long as veggie will rust a steel tank, and create what is called "chicken skin" that will come loose sooner or later. I know for using a steel tank in my truck, that has a two tank veggie system. Now have an aluminum veggie tank in the truck. No veggie in the 240.
