I think I cooked my turbo.
I think I cooked my turbo.
Parked it over the weekend. Monday morning no power lots of black smoke. I havent pulled the intake yet but.... last weekend I installed a MBC and kept turning it up until the overboost kicked in. Well the overoost never kicked in, probably because I also backed out the alda at the same time. It was whistling but I assumed it was an air leak somewhere. not the singing of the journals burning up.
Anyone know if the engine would still run if the turbo seized? Could it just be rotating slowly enough to not provide boost?
I have been looking for a turbo but now... well its more imperative.
I have that really nice powder coated red rebuilt turbo if your interested in it?
I've got $230 in it so far with shipping

The one on my car isn't bad
He said in the add it was from an 1986 300sdl after getting it I decided I'm going to save and get a w140 manifold and hy35
(05-24-2011, 05:10 PM)winmutt HY35 and HY35W same turbo?
(05-24-2011, 05:10 PM)winmutt HY35 and HY35W same turbo?
Lol. Putting a hy35 on a friends 85tdt once he gets it.
Yes they only made a hy35w. W= internally wastegated.
An he341 or hy35 are close to the same thing.
They are slow to make boost but it's still drivable and gets better mileage. I need to check my timing as I think it's way out.
I'll let you know what it's like on a car with a untouched pump as soon as we get the turbo.
(05-25-2011, 01:38 AM)dieselboy They are slow to make boostThis is not what I want. However you stated you get 10psi at 2500. What about at 2000? This us going on a 603 so it should spool better than the 617.

Oh a 603..... Ive yet to work with one of those. It's a cheap turbo that has been proven tough and reliable. 360° thrust bearing, fat shaft, etc.... Couldn't hurt to try it IMO.
Its hard to find a good turbo suited for the 603. Either all to small or too larger or unobtanium.
Dieselboy, what kinds of psi are you seeing at 200rpm?
At 200 rpm I bet none!
I'd need to drive it and report back. I don't remember. I want to say 5 but I've just been driving the thing lately. My car is never at 2k really. 3 is the sweet spot.
Any other mods done to the car?
Not to the engine yet. I have a euro manifold I will be using obviously. I want to get a modified pump but with a kid due in July I have other priorities. Also needs a new hg maybe new head so other priorities are first.
what's an hg?

What we really need is a ball bearing turbo comparable to a Holset hy35

What's that?
Ball bearing anything... So I have looked and looked and it seems the HE341 is the easiest to find replacement upgrade for stock/semi stock 603. I cannot find a HY30W to save my life. Given Lances report ont he HE341VE I am hoping the HE341 is a easy drop in as well.
ps I asked Lance to sell me his turbo and he said he was disappointed in me and had lost faith a long time ago. Talk about pot kettle hello black.
The pot calling the kettle African aluminum!

I dont think the wheel geometry has changed on theses older garetts since wwii.
I got it off 4btswaps. If you have time its a good chance you could pick up a hx30 or hy30 from there.
Anyone know what size pipe is used for the exhaust on the 603?
60mm would be my guess.
HE341 is a big turbo. I think the specs I have are incorrect and that its a hair off the HE351 on the comprssor wheel. As there is too much axial play and a guy just replied back about a HY30W I am going to try to return this.
Hy30? Thats tiny. To be honest I've never seen one.

Soooo... Got the left side of the engine off, turbo manifold etc last night. 2 of the studs are snapped ....
Once upon a time I took off the wastegate arm and lost the circlip. So I didnt cook the turbo, arm was just hanging off.............
For now I will probably mount the euro manifold and put the stock turbo on for another week or two until I can finalize fitment.
Been there done that lol.
