OM617 Oil pressure, any issues going higher than stock?
OM617 Oil pressure, any issues going higher than stock?
I'm redoing the pickup on my oil pump, and have what might be a stupid question.
Stock pressure on the relief valve is 7 bar, or ~ 100PSI.
Are there any issues with raising the max, or is the max ever indeed seen by the engine?
I know for some high-output g@sser engines people shim the regulator, but not sure on these old beasts.
I'll be able to arbitrarily set any pressure I want when I remake the relief valve housing, so figured I'd ask.
Well being as though the gauge always shows 50+lbs I have no clue.... I have always wanted to install a full sweep gauge just out of curiosity...
I could see blowing out seals in the turbo & other engine parts. Except for all out race engines (with the specially designed clearances) higher volume or pressure could actually rob horsepower.

It wouldn't hurt the turbo seals since there is a orifice in-line already...
It's in case I'm of when I recreate the cracking face of the relief valve in the new rear pump housing, and also for personal curiosity.
I personally wouldn't go higher then 7 bar. Gaskets/seals, the plastic IP line and even oil pump is stressed. As long your getting at least 3 bar or 43 PSI @3000 rpm your good.
.
But does the engine ever hit 7 bar in normal use?
I guess what I'm trying to get at is, would a variation of, say, 5PSI be an issue?
I'm going to do my best to recreate the relief housing dimensions to within a thousandth, but I could still be off.
I'll have to measure the travel of the piston from full-closed to the cracking surface, and run the numbers to find out how the spring rate and preload factor into it.
Oy vey, the things I get myself into!
