My ALDA takes forever to kick in when cold. Like 10-15min of driving. This is on the 87. Have a hard time believing its sticking... But I guess it could be?

Ideas?

Pop it off, clean it with something rubber-seal friendly.

Likely has EGR goop in it that takes a bit to warm up and de-sludgify.

Or, your shaft seal is possibly leaky?

Pop it off, clean it with something rubber-seal friendly.

Oh that might be an easy fix. I will get a can of brake cleaner and see what comes out of the ALDA. I cant get it off without taking manifold or IP off.

Oh that might be an easy fix. I will get a can of brake cleaner and see what comes out of the ALDA. I cant get it off without taking manifold or IP off.

Be careful with the brake parts cleaner, you don't want to eat the oring or shaft seal.

Its not the ALDA.


Clean / bypass the switchover valves or the intake grommet.

Its not the switch over valve, bypassed it still happens. Intake grommet? You mean the banjo? This was cleaned when I purchased the car.

Its not the switch over valve, bypassed it still happens. Intake grommet? You mean the banjo? This was cleaned when I purchased the car.

Could you have a boost leak?


A sticky wastegate / or a dirty valve could be the cause. When it warms up, it seals better?

This could be very true. I did just hook up the wastegate hose for the first time in probably a long time (bought the car this way about a year ago).

Then after I put in the manual transmission I started getting this wierd cyclic up down power thing at WOT, at the time I thought it was filters. Turns out it was the overboost system cycling in and out which I figured out after I saw the WG hose just laying there. As I have bypassed the overboost solenoid, it certainly cant be that causing the issue.

I am not even sure its the ALDA specifically. For all I know it could be the ELR. All I know is that I don't have fuel enrichment for 10-15minutes after start when its really cold outside. It is directly connected to temperature, when warmer or the engine is warm the time is shortened.

Interesting... My theory is that it's *somehow* related to the thermostatic system which is supposed to make the automatic transmission shift smoother when cold. It has a temp switch on the engine block, and a solenoid valve which I believe is supposed to keep the "blue flying saucer" from seeing boost (and therefore firming up shifts in response to power) until the engine is warmed up.

Could somehow during your manual swap, this have gotten connected in a weird way so that this system is bleeding off the boost signal to the ALDA until the thermostatic switch kicks in?

Quick test- just unplug the temp switch (by the engine thermostat, above the alternator) and see if you get ALDA enrichment immediately on a cold start.

I still think you should remove it. It's not as hard as you think, "only" 15 minutes of wrangling to get it out after getting it loose iirc.

On top of that, usually when this happens to me the car is extremely slow. As in, way less than an NA diesel slow. That makes me doubt that it is not-seeing-boost related.

Although I wonder what happens if vacuum somehow gets in. Maybe just leave the tube hanging unconnected and see what happens?
