Making boost issue with OM617a - bullonezero - 08-25-2018

Hello STD,

I'm having a crazy issue developing boost on/in my OM617a engine, this is a great running/starting engine

Engine condition
1.  ~150-200k miles
2. Cylinder compression: 270, 280, 280, 280, 290
3. Valve Adjustment performed <150 miles
4. W115 long runner intake
5. Timing chain condition: Unknown
6. Injection Timing: Unknown

I rebuilt the OEM turbo (Garrett made in France) and managed to get 12psi once, but most often 9 psi. I then installed a new genuine GT2871R, same boost results. On the GT2871R with two different sized Turbine Housings (.86, .64) the results are the same ~9-10psi max. I've gone 1-2 miles without the airfilter (perhaps there was a lot of restriction), no difference. I've put a lot of preload tension on the wastegate actuator arm (it's real tight), no difference.

With the GT boost comes on at:
1. 2400rpm=2psi
2. 3000rpm=8psi

With the OEM and new GT turbo (and different housings) I’m getting the same results.

I am looking really hard at the cylinder head, and air-flow in and out. I bought this engine used, and cleaned an insane amount of oil gunk from the original intake manifold.

I’m thinking a cylinder head rebuild with valve and porting work?

Thoughts anyone?

Any black smoke? If you don't have black smoke, you need more fuel, no need to search further. If there is plenty of black smoke but turbo is not building boost you need to find another cause.

No black smoke (no dark soot smoke), there is (i believe normal) light blue-ish smoke

If you are making limited boost but no smoke, then the cause of the lack of boost is most likely not enough fuel injected.

The day I bought my wagon and was driving it back I had a hole melted in the ALDA line yet it still made 7 or 8psi with the T3. Sounds like to need to check yours is working/pump tuned properly

Got it - thanks. I didn't think of fuel injection causes.

The hose (pressure signal) from the intake manifold to the ALDA in brand new. Perhaps if the ALDA is dirty inside (from oil gunk) it won't physically move when receiving a signal from the intake?

I'll check the ALDA (itself), and confirm injection timing
